  1. Re:Why? Who would use it? on Review Of Small Business Suite for Linux · · Score: 1

I am a student at Furman University, which uses a Notes email system. I certainly would use a Linux port of the Notes client. I can access the web-based client just fine under Linux, but it's a real pain in the ass compared to the Windows client. I also miss Notesminder when I boot under Linux. It's really quite ignorant to say that no one would use something, because you just don't understand everyone's circumstances. In my case, the lack of a native Linux Notes client is THE reason why I still have Windows on my machine at all, and it's THE reason that a lot of my classmates don't particularly care to give Linux a try. Consider that.

  2. Implications on 'Hacking' To Be Declared Illegal · · Score: 1

Even if this treaty is signed and ratified, it would open up a new pandora's box of problems for those trying to stifle online rights. I would suggest that any new hacking software would simply be distributed through freenet or mojonation. This treaty would completely backfire on the authorities. I think it's similar to what happened with napster (and no, this is not off-topic). When they threatened to shut down napster, people innovated and switched over to gnutella, over which the government has no control. In short, when a government or government tries to stifle the internet community, it adapts to survive. Kind of like a stubborn virus. The EU is making a huge mistake if it thinks this treaty will have much of an effect on anything.

  3. The nature of faith on Why Does The Universe Exist? · · Score: 1

I think an error in a lot postings in reply to this erroneously assume that faith must be logical. However, faith is not rational. If it were, it would be called knowledge. No one can prove the existence of a god or deity, but at the same time, no one can disprove it. We'd probably be better off discussing matters of knowledge and matters of belief separately.

  4. what about pi and e? on Why Does The Universe Exist? · · Score: 1

I would think that pi and e would certainly be numbers that affect the ability of our universe to sustain life. Pi is extraordinarily important in a variety of contexts, including the strengths of forces, and e has several ties to probability.

  5. Candidates need to win only 8 states on Politics, Assassination, and Debates · · Score: 1

Under the current electoral system, a candidate needs to win only 8 states to become president: CA, NY, TX, FL, OH, PA, and two others which I don't remember off the top of my head. Theoretically, a candidate could campaign only in those states, completely ignore the other 42, and be elected president of all 50. Of course, it probably made more sense when there were only 13 states and there was less disparity in their populations.

  6. How to vote for Bush with a clear conscience on A Minor Political Screed · · Score: 1

Remind yourself that Gore's solution to everything is to spend more money on it. Remind yourself that even if you think Bush isn't all that bright, he's got the best advisors in politics working for him, including Condaleeza Rice, Dick Cheney, and Colin Powell. Recall from your days of 7th grade math class that 6% of $100 million is more than 50% of $50,000, so naturally the very wealthy will benefit more in *nominal* terms. Listen to our founding fathers: "It would be thought a hard government that should tax its people one tenth part." -Benjamin Franklin Remember the 20 year presidential curse...every president elected in a year ending in zero since 1840 has died while in office, with the exception of Ronald Reagan (and he only barely survived an attempt on his life).
