We were all told here in Minnesota to vote for a third party because that would get matching funds in the next election.

Guess what? A crank known as Jesse Ventura walked in at the next election and won. On election night in his winning speech all he could ramble on about was how he felt like 'Rocky' (from the boxing movie). 'Rocky' was a profoundly individual achivement, and all Jesse-the-crank could do was act like he'd won the election himself and could claim it personally.

Giving legitimacy to a third party won't change anything. We'll just have three parties for political machines to take over and control.

And I could care less about Nader either way. He's a crank. I'd definitely actively vote against him if it seemed like he had a chance, but let's face it, nuts like him don't have a chance.

I can certainly endorse at least the title of your comment.

Nader speaks to the Middle Class. He certainly doesn't represent the Upper Class or the Working Class.

He's like those Middle Class Marxists one finds on college campuses. "Stand Up For The Worker's Rights" they exclaim as they rant and rave about some adventurist band of terrorists in Nicaragua or Bolivia. You know who I mean: middle class elitists who carry around a caricature of 'the noble workingman' in their hearts.

You're right. In fact, if government vans came by and forced everybody to vote, it would just mean that the media campaigns would have even MORE impact. The opinions of the guests on David Letterman and Jay Leno would matter more, and commercial time for political advertisements would go up tremendously in value.

I for one think there should be a competence test before people are allowed to vote.

You've got a rather twisted view of Gore Vidal's message. I'm sorry, I just can't visualize him ever even uttering the phrase 'crack whores'. The man has good taste.

If we're going to be literary, I prefer JG Ballard's view of Ralph Nader, as expressed in 'Crash' and 'The Atrocity Exhibition.' (you know, that classic work with the chapter titled 'Why I Want To Fuck Ronald Reagan' where RR's face is compared to a radiator grill, etc..)

It's also worth noting that part of the intent when the republic was set up was for state and local governments to have a lot of the political power. Keeping government close to the people keeps it more democratic. You're a citizen of a state first, under things the way they are. And since you can have more direct impact on your state or local government, it affords you more political power.

There are numerous issues in the current election that many of us feel the National government really has no business being involved in. Education should be a local/regional issue as much as possible. Issues of morality should be settled the same way. Far be it for the residents of a small town in Kansas to impose their notions of morality on San Francisco, or vice versa (this second point is often ignored).

Gore wants all ISPs to be required to track and log where children browse. This is an overall requirement he would impose on ALL net users.

My way of interpreting this: Gore wants a big overall form of censorship imposed on everybody. Bush wants a smaller form of censorship only imposed on access points that we all pay for with our taxes.

I'd choose the Bush plan over the Gore plan any day.
