  1. Re:3,000 miles a month? on Ride Along With a Real Verizon Wireless Tester · · Score: 1

I know that when I'm working on the ambulance, I regularly log about 200 miles in a typical 24 hour shift (people don't stop calling 911 after 5:00 PM, after all).

If I were driving constantly (which I'm not), that would be 8.3 miles per hour. If you figure I'm maybe driving for 8 hours total, that accounts for an average speed of 24 miles per hour - the average speed on non-major streets in Tucson, AZ.

  2. Strange place indeed on Reading Slashdot From Strange Locations · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am currently reading /. from inside an ambulance. The high levels of WiFi access in the city allow me to do my web browsing from almost anywhere while I am at work.

Instead of doing usual things during down-time, like read, watch television/movies, etc, I sometimes go on the internet and do things like read /. or other informative sites.

  3. Re:FP? on Microsoft Shared Source -- With a Twist · · Score: 1

Yes, this would be the case, but from what I understand Microsoft is writing more and more of its own code for Windows.

IIRC, this was due to crappy/buggy code in 3rd party code. Next time you see Windows (2k on up) crash, look closely at the BSOD, as it probably has some form of reference to what crashed. Odds are 50 to 1 that the part that caused the crash wasn't written by Microsoft.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think I would be interested to read some of the comments that people had to say on this matter. Does anybody know how the CD-ROM's that they speak of in the article could be obtained? This might even be good for my school's library.

  5. MSOE runs linux on the standard laptop on Where is Largest Linux Desktop Install? · · Score: 3, Interesting

The Milwaukee School Of Engineering has the option to run Linux on the laptops it hands out to its students and faculty. Many of the students get it because it is needed for at least one class. And some of the instructors get it so that they can teach the class.

Others get it because they are fed up with Microsoft and what it continues to market. The Linux OS offers the students the opportunity to fix what they don't like about M$ Windows.

With the number of students at MSOE around 2500 students at the school (almost all of which have the MSOE standard laptop), and about half of them running Linux, that puts the MSOE count up to somewhere around 1200.

All students and staff here have access to a linux operating environment on campus, and often connect to that using VNC or SSH, something that is almost necessary if one wants to publish a web page/site on the MSOE site.

If even half of the students that don't have Linux running on their laptop publish a web site, that means that 3/4 of the MSOE population is now using linux, which brings the count up to about 1800 or so.
