Hmmm. Well you know something, Microsoft is going to have to learn not to tout their unreleased OS as the greatest thing since sliced bread. You cannot have it both ways. Either it's a release candidate or it isn't. I doubt whether w2k will be bug free when it's finally released as well. History with Microsoft's new releases supports that. Microsoft's spin machine goes into overdrive whenever they want to garner mindshare. Slowly but surely you see all the promised features getting the ax. Why not concentrate on making an OS that is stable, reliable, secure and affordable? Oh, wait Linux already does that.
I've read endless press releases and articles trumpeting how wonderful w2k is, truth be told perhaps the crown jewel is nothing more than cubic zirconia. Wouldn't suprise me in the least.
My neighbor works at ILM as an intern, over the weekend they had a special showing for all the ILM employees up in Marin. She took her Dad. George Lucas made a point to attend the showing, and sat down for lunch with all of them. She's met him on a number of times and from what she has said he appears to be a nice fella.
As far as the hype goes - every single Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Toys R Us, etc. is making a buck on this too. Not just George Lucas. If you find the merchandising that troublesome, Mr. Katz -- vote with your wallet and don't see the movie, or buy the stuff. Pretty easy.
Just reported on CNBC.
Hmmm. How do you feel about the VA Linux, O'Reilly and SGI - Debian project? Do you think that is pure enough for GPL purists?
Those are all for profit companies. Don't know too many companies that have a goal of operating at a loss.
Use what is the best for the job. This my dog's better than your dog attitude is pointless. With all the Linux distros you have a choice.

There will be a rebuttal to Bob M's column, in next edition of IW.
