"Do you know that most young children today can identify dozens of corporate logos, but they cannot identify many plants, birds, and leaves purely on sight?"
Most adults, too. And there's good reason - it doesn't matter one single bit. The only possible use for most of that information is to be able to say to someone in a pretentious tone of voice "as you can note by the black body and the red tips on the wings, this is a Red-winged Black Bird!"
in case your comment was supposed to be sarcastic, i believe the original statement that NY is shooting free was referring to school shootings, not shootings in general.
This wouldn't work at all. First of all, in order to JUST charge "spammers", or "people that send out large quantities of unsolicited email", you would have to have some system of knowing if there were actually doing that, and also a system of actually making them pay. If they are using some other server without that server's permission to send this spam, as many of them do, then it would be impossible to charge them without finding out who did it. It's also difficult to have a system of knowing whether they are sending the email unsolicited. There just doesn't seem to be any feasible way to charge the spammers.
As he said in the interview, as far as having info closer, it aids in nullifying the Slashdot Effect, and also allows you to view popular information quicker. The relative value of pieces of information has absolutely nothing to do with the project at all.

When you go to buy a keyboard, you can request to have it extra "clicky". My dad has always bought keyboards that way. I suspect he normally buys them through IBM, but i would guess that anyplace that manufactures keyboards could make one for you. It does cost a little extra, but it's worth it!

The children who made the card put the site on there. I would guess that they were using it as an "example" site, without actually having gone there. It would be similar to me saying "suppose you go to www.somewhere.com, and..." blah blah blah. They didn't know that it was actually a porn site, any more than i know whether somewhere.com is a legit site (i'm too lazy to check right now).

If more people did this vote trading, it's possible that people would realize the electoral college basicaly sucks. Also, it is completely moral to trade votes; each candidate is still getting exactly as many popular votes as they deserve (as many as the people who think they should be president). Most impoartantly, it really really helps the third parties, who are essential to making this a more democratic nation in which we have real choices.

I mean, really. Is there any way that posting their stories online in addition to the printed version of the story hurts them in any way? Their story is part of the magazine/newspaper, and they already got paid for their services. The newspaper paying for thier story should basically bestow rights upon them to do with the story whatever they want, including posting it on their website.

Despite the moral feelings that i have on the subject of pornography, the effect of these feelings should be limited to my children alone. I can determine what i want my child to view. Other people have different values which they should be allowed to uphold with their children. And the government should not be able to make laws prohibiting kids from viewing "bad" material. However, when it is the government's own computer (such as in a public school) they should be allowed to filter whatever they want on that computer. It's theirs, after all. If a kid wants to view porn, he can do that at home. If the public computer allows him to view it, then the parent of the child suddenly loses the control they held over what the child should be allowed to view. Therefore, public terminals which are accessible by children should be filtered, because if they weren't, it would infringe on parents' rights to restrict their child's viewing.

Where are people getting the idea that Christians think sex is bad???
Christians have been saying sex is bad for a long, long time. Usually it's just more in the way they act then actually screaming out "SEX IS BAD!!!!" Their leaders are traditionally celibate (yes, i know this is changing now), so that they can be more "pure" or "holy". Their monks also take a vow of celibacy. Clearly, for many Christians, it has been taught that sex is bad. And why has this been taught? Because Chrisianity tends to have the view that the Soul and the Body work in opposition: it is the body that tempts the pure, good soul. And it has been viewed a lot that a denial of physical pleasures will result in an increase for the soul. Sometimes even physical pain was used to further increase the soul (cat of nine tails self-torture, for example). And denial of physical pleasures helps with repentance. Sex is a physical pleasure, so even within this limited scope, sex can be seen as a bad thing, or at least something noone wants to discuss or view or think about.

For once i agree with you. Our society is so caught up with sex as some gratification for own body, and teaching children a different view of sex could allow them to have much deeper, fulfilling sexual and relational exeriences. As kids they are really forming their views on things that they'll hold for most of their adult lives, difficult views to change without a LOT of work. Therefore, if pornography really does give them this view of sex, then kids' viewing of it should really be limited.
I think a large problem with people arguing over pornography is that different people are using different meanings of pornography. The "pro-porn" people tend to think that any nudity consitutes porn, and focus on that. There is no reason for kids not to view nudity, especially as an art form. However, when the porn is pushing on kids that view of sex that we agree is bad for them to have, the pornography should NOT be viewed by any child. Unfortunately, it can be a thin line to draw.

There is a basic morality spelled out by Christianity
At one time there was a basic morality spelled out by God, but now it has become "Believe in Christ as your savior". That's it! Nothing else needs to be done to be in God's favor, and being in God's favor is what being Good is all about, right?

People do not go around shouting "Convert or Die!"
I rather wish they WOULD say "Convert or Die" instead of their current message which is "Conver or spend the rest of existence in eternal, infinite torture". If that's not putting a gun to my head, what is? And as far as Christianity not trying to control people, what about all the christians who want the Ten Commandments in school, in an effort to make all kids, and people, follow them. That is completely trying to control people, and there are many, many more examples of that.

As stated in the article, there are already laws that cover obviously dangerous information from falling into other hands, including the identities of undercover agents. These laws are sufficiently narrow so that they are not applied outside of the desired area, but fully protect dangerous, sensitive material. So vetoing the bill only prevents "classified" yet not dangerous material from being viewed by the public, which is exaclty what should happen.

Picking on a kid because he dresses differently is exactly like picking on a kid for being Black or Latino.
It's not exactly the same thing. The kid who dresses differently has a choice about how he dresses. He CHOOSES to be not mainstream. Black and Latino kids do not choose to be black or latino. However, it's still wrong to pick on someone for their wardrobe selection.

"to think that anyone wants vr to replicate RL is fundamentally flawed logic."
Look, the thing is, most people don't want VR to be JUST LIKE RL. However, i think for many people, the more real the better. I mean, with VR you could experience things you just can't in RL. You could basically "time travel" back to the middle ages, and fight in duels with people or do all sorts of things. You could use magic even. And I don't think i'm alone here when i say that the closer i can get to feeling magic course through my veins and create some effect....i mean, that would be AWESOME. And if people don't want VR to be like RL, then why bother making it more realistic at all?

Look, parental supervision won't work at schools. And having no public net devices for kids to use is just not feasible. Many classes require them to go online and do research, or do a number of other things on the web. If there are not public means of doing so, and the kid isn't lucky enough to have a computer (some people's parents don't have that much money) then that kid is SOL for that assignment. Public computers help to alleviate this problem in a world where kids MUST learn to use computers in order to function.

The thing is, with an A glove, goggles, and mouse, it still isn't realistic. Have you EVER thought that the world you were in was real? The movements are so different than in real life; you move the mouse instead of walking. The sphere addresses that very issue; you walk the same way you always have. Walking and running are the same as always. It is just one more step towards realism. Of course, those with cerebral palsy or broken legs would probably prefer the other methods of VR....

MP3s can and will be distributed whether or not Napster exists. Napster just makes it easier. Now, if napster dies, all that happens is that everyone uses the next company. There will always be a way for them to illegally get what they want. What the article is basically saying is that suing every company that does this is an ineffective way to go about things. Suing should be done, but it should be combined with a change in marketing so that buyers can get what they want without having to resort to illegal means.
