Now that I have seen an alternative, I am not so interested in what the content providers provide. I like mixing and sharing with my friends. I like listening to songs from the latest concerts (downloaded) mixed with originals (purchased). I like to mix songs sung by friends with songs by megastars. I want new age on the same album as celtic.
I am happy to pay but I would be very unhappy going back to only official releases.
Just to do it I once watched a day of CSPAN. It happened that Congress was considering whether to legalize DAT. The recording industry was protesting the potential "cloning" of their product, but it became obvious that their real worry is that high quality recordings were going to be made by ordinary people. They were more interested in controling content than in the copying of content. And this is why, imho, the RIAA is not pursuing the same path as the old SPA. The old software providers made money by being paid for their efforts. The music content providers make money by controling access to the content. It is a different battle.
