That would explain why getting any cooperation out of Oracle on NetWare recently has been extrememly difficult.

Point #1 is why institutions are contemplating switching to a Windows network.

Point #2: Samba is only good for about 100 users. Check out www.networkcomputing.com They have an article from a few months back about Linux/NetWare/and NT-2000 and what stands up or what shakes out. Linux works, but still isn't ready for enterprise adminstration and still needs Samba tuned to hold 500+ users per box.

We have a P133 Netware 5.0 box that holds 200+ users on IP and IPX. AND a Ppro box that holds IP, IPX, and AppleTalk users on Netware 5.0 that never needs rebooting. Netware may be old, but it works well!

I AGREE! Can you imagine how much worse off the network would be with guys fiddling with BSD rather than Netware? If you can't get Netware straight, BSD is NOT in your network's future!

I used to work at a place like that! What fun it was to ghost and re-ghost. That was the "standard".

That's why I quickly moved on to REAL company!

Actually, no! I'm a NetWare zealot who runs Linux, Be0S, NT, MacOS...

I'm fully aware of the benefits of Linux, it's rock solid, has an incredibly long shelf-life, and runs on the slimmest of hardware.

Please keep in mind the article was about renegade boxes...those that have a foothold within the network and providing a service to users without the IT guys knowing about them. We have a case now where MARS_NWE is SAP'ing out on the nework and messing with the Netware IPX clients...because of one "renegade" box. That's not good with several hundred users are affected. I get to work on finding the guy with this service running and tell him to shut it off! Why have him shutdown his MARS__NWE service? It's not needed. He can use his Linux machine all day long, but not when it's interfering with other network operations. I get to work on that the rest of the afternoon. Fun, eh?

We use Linux a LOT around here! It's no stranger to our environment. But it can't just show up and serve files for workgroups. Why? Because when we get calls from users that say "can you retrieve my file from backup tape? I deleted it." And we never heard of the server it's on! We need to know to help out the end user, not leave them hanging. I don't care if they use Linux as a desktop workstation, but as a server, we need to be aware of what will be up against months down the road.

    Thank you.
