Please let me correct that for you:
"Everywhere in the world, there is no competition. Oh there are companies that are theoretically competing with each other, but they seem to have agreed that charging outrageous prices is working for all of them so why fuck with it"
One way to overcome this is to use firmware like tomato (if possible on your model). It have some nice Channel scanning option in the wireless menu that would keep the noise level as low as possible.
Regarding the wearing of cheap electronics one way is to keep the wireless stopped when not used (like in the night). One can always configure time schedule for auto or button stop/start.
That's odd. I have 50/30 for around 15 euros (Megalan network) and a bit lower (~2-3 euros less) with 1 or 2 year contract. I can also get 100/40 for a bit less than 30 euros without contract.
Only forgot to mention that I live in one of the most controversial places in Eastern Europe, so don't envy too much:)

But will it work under Linux :)
Audio recording of a lecture should only be a way to help yourself if you forget something afterwards, nothing more.
Or use an SSH to your personal tomato router via putty and browse /or e-bank/ from that connection with portable firefox browser?
