This is good for boot time but it is not the complete answer for a portable desktop. The ability to dock and undock without closing all windows and restarting X is still needed.
The beauty of having a laptop with 802.11b in the office is the ability to take the computer to meeting, take minutes, read e-mail, etc then go back to your desk - without shutting the computer down and rebooting it. I concider restarting X equivalent to a reboot.
Resizing the root window is also high on the wish list of those using a docking stations. is a start but Gnome/KDE should be informed so new windows are opened on "active" part of the desktop and the taskbar can be kept in the field of view. In my case, my LCD is 1024x768 which looks very bad on a 21" trinitron. My docked resolution is 1600x1200.
