  1. If only they can get writers and actors on New Star Trek Series Rumblings · · Score: 2

I'm trying to be possitive, 'cause I really want the next series to not suck too much. However, I hope the cast of characters isn't set in stone. The Chief Engineer looks like someone took "Bones" and pulled out his "Medical Officer" module in favor of a "Chief Engineer" module. A Vulcan Science Officer? An "excentric" Medical Officer? A female Communication Officer? It sounds far too much like ST:TOS (I know originality and vision are rarities in Hollywood, but a little effort would be nice). The thing that really gets me is that out of seven regular characters, only two are female. What is this, the 50's? "Women are too soft and can't cut it out here on the wild frontier?" Most of this wont make a difference if they can get a group of decent writers and actors. I just hope they can.

  2. Exchange server reliability on When Is Exchange Inappropriate For The Enterprise? · · Score: 2
The company I work for (unnamed so I don't get fired), has been using Exchange server for over two years now. Back in 1998, they implemented a policy of weekly reboots because of disappearing system resources. They upgraded the operating system (still Windows, of course) the first part of 2000, and the weekly reboot cycle went away for a little while. A few months ago, we started getting reboot notices at least weekly, often times more, still because of "lost resources" (which I'm reading to mean "memory leak"). Following is a sampling of the (edited to remove identifiable information) reboot notices.

    Subject: System Status: Exchange Server
    Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998
    From: IS Support
Until further notice, please be aware the Exchange Server will be rebooted every Monday night at 6:00. The estimated down time is between 15 and 20 minutes.

    Subject: System Info:
    Date: Tue, 10 Oct 2000
    From: [deleted]

Platform/Application/Network affected: Multiple system reboots Wednesday night 10/11/00 including [the name of the Exchange server plus three other NT based servers deleted]
Purpose: Each of these systems needs a reboot to regain system resources.
Date and Time: Wednesday, October 11, 2000 beginning at 7:00PM.
Estimated down time: Each system should be down for no longer than 30 minutes.

  3. Try eskimo.com on Desperately Seeking Secure and Reliable Email? · · Score: 2
They've been around in various forms since the mid 80's. I've had a unix shell account with them since 1993. Although I no longer live near any of their dialup numbers, I still use them for email, via ssh. They won't feed you any bull, give you a free two week trial run, and are prompt about reporting outages (and the reason why). Outages related to shell service and email are relatively rare. Certainly better than SWBell (who I get DSL from, at the moment).
