Yes, you read that right. I hate to rain on the parade here with a dose of reality, but solar power is not nearly "clean" as so many seem to think it is. Yes, the sunlight itself is "clean", but the massive quantities of materials needed to collect and convert it to usable energy are not so clean. It turns out that solar is far and away more harmful to the environment that nuclear power.
Don't believe me? Go to my webpage, Ignorance about Nuclear Power is Killing Us and click on the link called "The Hazards of Nuclear Power" by Prof. Bernard L. Cohen. Then take a look at the table near the end of the paper.
Then direct everyone you know to the same link. Your help is needed to defeat ignorance.
I hope you're right. I just got a hot tub and we set it around 102-104 deg F. I'm surprised I've read nothing about hot tubs yet in this discussion. I'm not so worried about myself, but I would be a bit concerned about my 8-year-old boy. Wouldn't want to cook the family jewels that early. Then again, if it really does damage, you'd think it would hurt -- or at least be a bit uncomfortable.
If global warming is indeed caused by man, then the environmentalists who oppose nuclear power (i.e., most environmentalists, but not all) are more to blame than anyone else. Check out some Amazing Facts About Nuclear Power.
I was just thinking about his amazing litany of anti-Bush lies, and it occurred to me... he's probably been listening to Dan Rather for years!
Just for the record, most if not all of these lies have been refuted over and over again. But some gullible people think they are true because they have been repeated over and over again.
If Al Gore didn't have a well-deserved reputation for firing off whoppers, this one wouldn't have stuck.
I can't even remember all the bogus claims he made. Remember the one about the prescription drug? How about the one about the union lullaby his mother supposedly sang to him as a child (which wasn't written until he was an adult)?
That's before we even get to the flip-flops on policy. For example, after the first Gulf war he was all over Bush I for being too easy on Saddam. I saw the video of his righteous indignation on Fox News. That's the great thing about Fox News. All they have to do is replay the video of the two-faced bastards. No comments are even needed.
Then of course there's the fact that he was strongly pro-life when he was running for office in Tennessee -- but became vociferously pro-choice to run for national office. How's that for core beliefs?
Like John Kerry, Al Gore's only core belief is that he should have been President.
The problem is that if a voting machine is programmed to cheat, it is easy enough to fake a paper receipt. I could cast a vote for A, have the screen verify that I am voting for A, receive a printed receipt that tells me I voted for A, and STILL have that vote count for B within the black box.
That's why you the paper ballots should used for the real count. The electronically recorded votes should be used for a fast but tentative initial count and also as a substitute for lost or severaly damaged paper ballots. See this.
Let me start by confessing that I did not read the article. It may be very informative. Nevertheless, what always seems to get missed in discussions of nuclear waste disposal is that fact that the problem is miniscule. The amount of high-level nuclear waste generated is millions of times less than coal waste for the same amount of energy produced. And -- hold on -- the nuclear waste contains less overall radioactivity than the coal waste!
If the U.S. went completely nuclear for all its electric power, the amount of land needed for waste disposal over the next 10,000 years would be about the same as it is now for two weeks worth of coal ash!
I agree 100% that raping in prison must be stopped. It's cruel and unusual punishment if ever there was such a thing.
By the way, according to The Myth of Male Power by Warren Farrell, if you count rape in men's prisons, men are actually the victims of rape more often than women. Amazing, eh?
"The right-wing nutjobs usually won't back down, even if they have been proven wrong with evidence."
Actually, it's the left that repeats lies over and over, until they start to take hold. Cases in point: Bush's National Guard service, and the supposed efforst by Republicans to "suppress" the black vote. Nothing but lies repeated over and over.
If greenhouse gas emissions are really causing global warming, the obvious solution is nuclear power. It has other massive environmental and health benefits to boot. Read why Ignorance About Nuclear Power is Killing Us (literally).
The Canadian paper-only system is adequate, but a combination of paper and electronic ballots can be more secure if implemented properly. The voter-verifiable paper ballots should get generated automatically. The electronic votes would then be used for a fast--but tentative--result. If the paper ballots for a precinct get lost or damaged, the electronic votes could be used as a backup. That makes it more secure and reliable than a paper-only system.
I voted in California on Tuesday, and nobody asked me for ID. Is it just me, or does that seem to anyone like an invitation to fraud?
Think about it. If I get hold of any other voter's name and address, I can go vote for him. All I need to do is to be sure to get there before he does and be sure that none of the poll workers know him. The latter may be the biggest challenge and risk.
In fact, not requiring ID allows party hacks to vote for anyone they know will not vote. Is that right? Obviously not. But guess which party will scream "racism" if we try to close this security hole? Funny how the desire for fair elections makes one a "racist" these days, eh?
You're missing the point. The paper ballots would be the ones that really count. The electronically recorded would be used for a fast--but tentative--result. If the paper ballots are damaged or lost for a particular precinct, then the electronic ballots could substitute, but otherwise they would not count.
The opposition to nuclear power will go down in history as the epitomy of anti-technology ignorance. I have compiled a few articles on the matter by the great Bernard Cohen.
Bernard L. Cohen is Professor-Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy and of Environmental and Occupational Health at University of Pittsburgh. He has authored 6 books, over 300 papers in scientific journals, and about 75 articles in non-technical journals. He has presented invited lectures in 47 U.S. States, 6 Canadian provinces, 7 Japanese prefectures, 6 Australian states and territories, and 24 other countries in Europe, Asia and South America. His awards include the American Physical Society Bonner Prize and the Health Physics Society Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award. He has been elected Chairman of the Division of Nuclear Physics of the American Physical Society, and Chairman of the Division of Environmental Sciences of the American Nuclear Society.
"When you lose your career, property, privacy, and education then come and tell me it's not that bad."
I nearly lost my children to the government even though I committed no crime. I had to lay out something like $60,000 to get them back. It had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with George Bush, John Ashcroft, or any other Republican. It was the politically correct "liberal" Nazis at work, and I'm sure they are busy in your community too trying to figure out how to snatch your children (if you have any).
Quit letting the ACLU and other leftist orgainzations mislead you into obsessing about nothing and wake up to the real threats to your rights. Like so many other media-manipulated pawns at slashdot, you've been brainwashed and you don't even know it.
I find it truly sad to see so many slashdot readers so misinformed about the PATRIOT Act.
Its main effect is to bring established law enforcement practice into the 21st century. For example, established wiretapping protocols now apply to cell phones. So what? The same judicial approval is still needed. Do you think wiretapping should not be allowed? If so, I disagree. Can it be abused? Perhaps, but so can almost any law enforcement procedure.
As for the paranoia about searching library records, get a life and quitting fretting about nothing. Public library records have always been public (duh!).
I'll bet nobody here on slashdot has been personally affected by this Act (unless terrorists read slashdot, which I doubt).
I realize that this post will get modded down and flamed or ignored, but I don't care.
What I consider "fundamentally wrong" about the Theory of Evolution is its phisosophical underpinnings. The problem, as I see it, is that many evolutionists start out with the *premise* that life began and "evolved" by purely naturalistic mechanisms with no intelligent design.
Now, naturalism that's a purely valid *hypothesis*, but as a *premise* it is simply an unproven postulate or assumption. It is nothing more than an article of faith -- faith in nothing whatsoever, but faith nevertheless.
After studying the matter, these very scientists proclaim that they have indeed explained evolution without resort to intelligent design. Well, lo and behold, their conclusion is identical to their premise. Surprise, surprise.
Big Lie #1: Everyone who disputes the Theory of Evolution is an irrational "Creationist" who puts faith before reason.
Big Lie #2: The scientific facts overwhelmingly corroborate the Theory of Evolution.
I personally believed these two lies until I actually did some readong on the topic. I'm no expert, but I have read six or seven books on the topic, including a couple in favor of evolution. I have no doubt that the Theory of Evolution is fundamentally wrong and is based on faulty premises.
But please don't take my word for it (I'm sure you won't). Read the book Not By Chance! by Lee Spetner. Spetner is a professor emeritus of Information Theory at MIT, and he has mathematically debunked the notion of purely naturalistic evolution with absolutely no intelligent design or guidance.
If you search hard enough, perhaps even with a search engine, you can always find some oddball coincidence that coincides with which party wins the presidential election. So what?
It reminds me of all those great psychics who predicted the last 18 earthquakes. Ya, but they forgot to tell you that they also predicted the last 1800 that never happened.
I'm not claiming to have all the answers here, but think of it as follows.
Campaign finance money is often used for advertisement on TV. In other words, the contributor is essentially leasing TV time from a TV station. Now ask yourself why someone who doesn't own or control a TV station should be prohibited from *leasing* something that the TV station *owns*? If its dangerous in the hands of the lessor for a few 30-second spots, then why isn't it all the more dangerous in the hands of the owner all the rest of the time?
The owner has all kinds of time, which allows him to get away with far more subtle distortions. And that is what happens all the time, often when you are not even aware of it. In fact, that's precisely the point: you often *aren't* aware of it.

It's the way to go.
Does this have implications for SHA-1, or is it still secure?

I don't have time for a detailed reply, nor does your rant warrant one, but suffice it to say you are an idiot.
+5, Truth
