  1. Dude, you're holding it wrong on Ask Slashdot: Best Camera For Getting Into Photography? · · Score: 1

You really can't buy your way to better pictures unless what you have now is garbage. If you really want better pictures, you need to learn how to get the most out of a camera. A DSLR isn't going to help you if all you want is point and shoot. If all you want is point and shoot, you aren't going to get the picture quality you want. Don't look at a camera like a video card. YOU have to do at least some of the work when it comes to photography. Figure out what makes the pictures you take now look bad and figure out what you need for them to look better.

It's not spam, as in unsolicited email. The game has a built in chat system for people to communicate and quest together. What they do is create a character with the 30-day free trial offers (my guess is they can't be tracked since there is no credit card). They then use macros/addons to harvest who's playing (character names) and send chat messages to all of them, advertising their website. They then delete the character and get another 30-day free trial offer and start again. What Blizzard has done is put in limitations so they can't do this anymore.

  4. What about before? on Significant FBI Abuses of the Patriot Act · · Score: 1
The case numbering suggests that there were at least 153 investigations of misconduct at the FBI in 2003 alone.

This doesn't really give us anything to compare it to. How many cases of misconduct were there each year before the PATRIOT act? How many agents are there? How many investigations were there with no misconduct?

The example given talks about an FBI investigation into a US citizen and that the investigating agent was months late on filing the 90-day and the 1-year report. Regardless of the severity of this misconduct, I'm not sure I see what this has to do with the PATRIOT Act. If the agent was forced to get a warrant prior to the investigation, it doesn't mean that agent would have necessarily complied with all of the follow-up paperwork.

I just find it hard to get up in arms over what little information was presented. Or maybe I'm just missing the point.

but can you buy a standard 6600 video card for "pcs" and throw it in a mac?

I believe, technically, you could always use standard video cards in a Mac. I think the major problem was Apple monitors were ADC so the "Mac" version of video cards came with an ADC interface. Since Apple had been selling Macs with only ADC video cards, video card manufacturers weren't developing drivers for the non-ADC cards (I might be wrong on this). But I believe you could always use any AGP/PCI video card as long as you had a monitor that supported DVI or VGA (and there was a driver).

The Mac and PC video cards should now be identical hardware-wise, so my guess is that since Mac OS and Mac OS X are both supported OS's for this card, you should be able to plug in any 6600 so long as your Mac supports PCI-X. Also, if you have one of the older ADC monitors you'll need the DVI-to-ADC adapter that Apple sells for $99.

  11. Re:Mac perspective on Affordable Modern Graphics Cards · · Score: 1
If you look at the tech specs for the nvidia GeForce 6600 they list Mac OS as being supported. This isn't all that surprising now that Apple have chosen the DVI interface for their monitors instead of their own ADC interface.

The ADC interface made sense in that power, video and USB were brought up to the monitor in a single cable but I'd rather have a larger selection of video cards for my Mac.

I think the lawsuit against Fox over bovine growth hormone proves that this will cost them nothing. From what I gather, Fox reporters were pressured by Fox executives to alter their news story in order to paint a prettier picture about the effects of BGH. When the reporters didn't change the story they were fired. A lawsuit insued and Fox has won on appeal because, get this, the FCC doesn't require news agencies to tell the truth.

So, whether this was done on purpose or accidentally, from a legal perspective it matters little.
