    Did you install Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server on your desktop, and selected to install the DNS server to serve clients on the public internet?

    I sure didn't install BIND on my Linux desktop, just like you don't run a nameserver on yours.

    You want to trash talk BIND, go ahead. Linux is not BIND.

    Here is the accouncement for khttpd in June 1999. That's pre-2.4 if you didn't notice, the current kernel at the time of announcement was 2.2.9
    Alan Cox wasn't sleeping, here is his 2c worth, about 2 weeks after the announcement. It's just a special in-kernel cache after all, not like running IE5 or IIS5 wholly in the kernel like some other OS's.

    The home page is http://www.fenrus.demon.nl. kHTTPd only serves up static content, all non-static stuff is passed to a userland webserver, like Apache or Zues.

    The downside is that your print server is still running Windows 98.

    The upside is that it reboots in about 5 seconds under VMWare, which is something that happens quite often on the Windows 9x line.

    Does this version of Samba in essence emulate Microsoft's licensing agent, allowing free use of features that Microsoft wants you to pay for, or does this mean something else?
    Sounds like something that could result in a tidal wave of lawsuits from Redmond.


    Funny you should mention this situation. Are you familiar with Gateway Services for Netware included with Windows 2000 Server? What this allows you to do is set up a Novell server using IPX/SPX, connect a Win2k server to it with that service running, and an entire Win2k TCP/IP network of Windows clients can use the Novell server and only have to buy a single Netware license, since it's only using a single connection (the Win2k Server). Think of it as NAT for a Novell Server.

    A tidal wave of lawsuits? I don't see any from Novell against Microsoft, why should Microsoft care if Samba beat them at thier own (dirty) game?

    Businesses don't pirate Microsoft software if they value thier livelihood. See www.bsa.org for details.

    Despite being a .org, the bsa makes a ton of profit-money for policing Microsoft software licences.

    sudo sort of does this, but its not as finely grained as the model in NT.

    Of course, I find the model in NT to be too finely grained, so that delegating tasks to underlings becomes an administrative nightmare.

    How many of your desktops do you run at 256 colors?
    XFree86 can do remote desktops at better depths, and its free.

    It's licensed under the GPL.
    Fork Bomb Defuser (rexFBD) allows you to configure the max_forks_per_second and max_tasks_per_user parameters, at the time of loading the module. Any possible Fork Bomb is detected using these parameters and is defused (deactivated) in real time. The uid of the user who started it, as well as the time it was started is logged in /var/log/messages for the system administrator to take action.

    There is also a company called Trelos that makes a Win4Lin product. Both VMWare and Win4Lin require a licensed copy of Microsoft Windows. WINE does not, but can use dll's from a licensed copy of Microsoft Windows.

    First off Fox owns the "X-files" name and all derivations of it. Period. The law is the law and you must obey it at all times even if it is a law that you think was "bought" by special interests.

    It's a toss-up between New Technology, or N-Ten, as the project was called when it was OS/2 NT.

    Of course the original goal was to set up the hardware, drivers, and OS and never have to reboot it for any reason (application related), but of course its untrue to this very day.

    Windows XP is Windows 2000 Second Edition, or even Windows NT 5.1

    Windows ME is Windows 98 Third Edition.
