  1. Re:The real problem on Maybe Video Games Don't Make Kids Kill · · Score: 1

That's ridiculous. If the problem is the availability of weapons, why are these mass shootings a new phenomenon? Firearms availability in the US isn't anything new--Dad still has a rifle he mail-ordered from Sears as a kid. No background checks, no waiting periods, no concerns about kids having guns--and no problem with kids shooting up their schools. If anything, fewer kids today are exposed to firearms than in years past. The prevailing attitude in the US today is that guns are a "Bad Thing", and I really believe that this is a big part of the problem.

Besides that, it's not the kids who are familiar with guns who are responsible for these incidents. (Yes, the Jonesboro incident is an exception to this.) As someone who grew up in a household with guns, I can tell you that as a child I had far more respect for firearms than my friends who weren't exposed to them. Firearms weren't mysterious or forbidden, they were simply a fact of life. No one seems to remeber the experiment the Denver police department did a few years ago. They hid several unloaded weapons in a room and sent in a bunch of school kids. The kids who had experience with firearms left the guns alone and went to get an adult (I don't recall for sure, but I think one of the older kids even made sure the gun was unloaded before leaving it). The kids who hadn't been exposed to guns, almost without exception, picked them up, pointed them at their friends, and pulled the trigger--much to the dismay of their parents who had taught them, "Guns are bad!"

Blaming the availability of guns doesn't make any more sense than blaming violent video games or movies. And until our society is willing to take a look at the real issues behind these incidents rather than simply looking for something to blame, these incidents will continue. I don't personally know anyone who has used a gun to harm another human being. I do know dozens of normal, well-adjusted people who own firearms and take great pleasure in their responsible use.

I've got a ViRGE/GX2, and the system WILL freeze unless I add Option "no_accel" to my XF86Config file. I've tried numerous fixes I found searching DejaNews, every resolution/color depth combination imaginable as well as every XF86 update since I bought the card. With the acceleration features turned off, X will run for weeks on end - usually until KDE decides to crash, but otherwise, I am guaranteed a frozen system (not even network access) soon after starting X.

Actually, he used a combination of the CGI script(s) AND a known exploit with the cron package. It took both for him to get in. Applying the cron fix would have stopped this particular exploit.
