  1. CowboyNeal on Soldering with a Toaster Oven · · Score: 1

When was the last time that CowboyNeal actually posted 4 stories in a row? Is everyone else out drinking already?

I tell you, the world's gone mad.

  2. Overclocking = $$ for Intel?? on Intel Patents Anti-Overclocking Technology · · Score: 1

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't overclocking good for Intel? When you burn out your chip and then have to buy a new one, isn't that more money for them? What am I missing here?

  3. Star Trek on Cringley Asking for 12 Month Predictions · · Score: 2

It's a little longer of a time horizon than 12 months, but every scientist/engingeer should drop whatever they're doing and start concentrating on creating a real, functioning holodeck. Hopefully we can figure it out before I'm too old to use it...

  4. Video vs. Communication on Nokia 6650, Super 3G Phone · · Score: 4, Interesting

It's interesting that Nokia is positioning this phone, seemingly, as a "multimedia" phone vs. a communication tool. Their website seems to emphasize "movie making" and picture taking, but not better communication or interactivity with your office. However, I'm wondering who'd actually buy it for those features rather than just take a digital camera with them. I know that I'm a big fan of having a phone that communicates really well and a camera that takes pictures really well, not a convergence device. I'll probably sing a different tune in a couple of years when some magic device takes care of all of my pocket garbage, but until then give me a phone which handles one thing and handles it really, really well.

    >> If the RIAA had owned the buggy industry in 1900, I think we'd all still be whipping our horses to get to work in the morning.

Or if a few (say 5 or so) large companies owned the automobile business, we'd still be driving to work in 2002...

  7. Re:Go is harder or.....? on NYT Story On Go Programs And AI · · Score: 1

My point is not that Go is more computationally intensive, I know it is. But, you can have a good chess program without having it be brute-force approach. I would think that the same is possible with Go, but the same amount of time researching/programming/studying, etc. has not been spent on it vs. Chess.

  8. Go is harder or.....? on NYT Story On Go Programs And AI · · Score: 2, Insightful

My question has always been is Go really that much harder for a computer to play than Chess or is Chess just more popular and more energy has been devoted to developing computers to play it?

  9. Nothing will probably come out of this on Security, Due Process and Convenience · · Score: 1

Since the US government and a whole mess of tech groups are against this, I'm doubting whether this lower court ruling from Minnesota will stand for very long. The application of this ruling would do nothing to ensure better due process and it would only waste time/money. It seems that this entire episode is JALL (just another legal loophole) that will soon be closed in the correct manner.

  10. Re:How about the most serious bug of all? on Many Eyes, Shallow Bugs, and Spider-Man · · Score: 5, Insightful

I would agree that the romance plot may not have been done exceptionally well, but to say that it's useless is a bit strong. Parker's relationship with M.J. is one of the cornerstones of his personality. Without her, he becomes Batman - a vigilante. With her grounding him, he keeps his ties to the 'real' world in a way that would be impossible with just his Aunt.

  11. For the narscisist... on Geek Gift Ideas 2001 · · Score: 1

Having someone register your own domain name for you might be an interesting gift. Imagine being email@soandso.tlc rather than sso14@city.state.provider.com or even worse Bigsoso1@aol.com.

You could also get one of these fly-by-night operations to send someone a certificate saying that a star was named after them. Might be nice for those who have large egos, but aren't going to dig too deeply into how this illegitimate process actually works.
