I made a small investigation, and found out that Roblimo used a machine with two network addresses, which exposed one well-known (to me) CUPS weakness. The solution is simple and I have made it available on the Mandrake Forum.
The HP DeskJet 712C should work without any problem. As I know, it is the same hardware as HP DeskJet 710C and so it should work as the other guy commenting onto this Slashdot article writes:

Perhaps you contact him for more info. As I know, you simply choose "HP DeskJet 712C" in the printer configuration program (printerdrake, kups) and then it should work. If the quality is poor, you should set the default options either by starting kups, right-clicking onto the symbol of your printer, and choosing "Configure Printer" in the pop-up menu. Or you use the web interface (http://localhost:631/printers/). Go to your printer in the list and click on the "Configure Printer" button.
