  1. issues related to the ever-changing c++ standard? on Red Hat's Michael Tiemann On gcc, ReiserFS & More · · Score: 2
Really? The C++ Standard is ever-changing? I think ANSI/ISO must be suprised to hear that! C++ was standardized in 1998, and "frozen" long before that. Anyone remember the draft standard?

Maybe RH needs people who can read a spec?

  2. Re:And the next logical step is.... on Amazon Charging Different Prices for Same Items? · · Score: 1

And if they charge a dollar more as a penalty, why wouldn't that mythical shopper continue to make purchases elsewhere? In this scenario, it would be more likely that the company would decrease the price in order to attract that shopper's business.

  3. Re:You are probably right on Non Disclosure Agreements in Interviews? · · Score: 1

Ah, but in this market there is no such thing as a second interview for a qualified candidate. (S)He either gets the offer or not. Those who *might* be good enough get called back for the second interview.

But if you shine in the first interview, the job is yours.

  4. Re:Linking on Legality Of Linking To Be Tested In Court? · · Score: 1

It's trivial for a site owner's that is against (or afraid of) deep linking to prevent it. Witness any one of a myriad sites that redirect to the front page or login page) if you didn't enter via their site (cf. NY Times online). They can check the REFERRER field, and/or use a cookie or other session management mechanism.

  5. Diva spark source on Symphony For Dot Matrix Printers · · Score: 2
When I worked for an unnamed analytical instrument company, we were working on a new solid state spark source that was called "DIVA" (and I can't remember what it was an acronym for). It had distinctly different pitches depending on the power output of the spark and the VP of engineering (who was very old school) wanted to have the firmware drive the source to play the Star Spangled Banner on powerup as an embedded pun on the name.

We never did do it, though.

D Flat is a text mode UI framework by Al Stevens and described over a series of columns he wrote for Dr. Dobb's Journal.

  7. Re:x86, die die die! on Is The x86 Obsolete? · · Score: 1

x86 is a processor architecture and not a systems architecture. Don't confuse the two. Lack of IRQ's is a problem of the ISA (hack! spit!) legacy we are all (mostly) stuck with.

The instruction set is wierd, I'll grant you and the original 386 protected mode and segmented architechture was horrible, but after 5 (6?) revisions, it works pretty well.

Not that I'm against innovation...I just want my code to run on it. New processors with no support don't last in this world.

  8. Bad idea! Bad! Bad! on Identification By Typing · · Score: 1
I'm skeptical as well. I use the keyboard all day long, but I know I don't always type with the same rhythm. Perhaps for password entry since it's burned into my brain, but even then it varies when I'm jazzed on caffiene or if I'm on the phone and typing with one hand or if my son is in my lap.

What about when typing on a laptop, or one of those ergonomic (not!) keyboards?

Of course, this must be doomed to failure. I hope.
