My main concern is the use of the not withstanding clause. I am leaning towards voting for the Conservative party in the London-North-Center riding. If anything I'd be tempted to vote Liberal as a reaction to any misunderstanding. Mr. Day and friends are making so much out of nothing, such as Chretien calling a bank offical about a loan. Like, who cares, he didn't hurt anyone so making issues out of things like that only makes me want to support the current government.
-Flat tax is good
-Making Indians pay tax is good
-Free votes are good
-Tightening immigration is good
-Endorsing the use of the notwithstanding clause is a serious problem.
Enough of a problem that I will not be voting for the Alliance this election.
It's very comforting to hear from someone else who feels the same way. This issue of the not-withstanding clause seems to be an absolute nonissue. It really worries me.
Its important to note that its the crown attornies that have appealed this to the supreme court, because the British Columbia court ruled in favour of the person charged. Hence, possesion of these images is not currently a crime in that province.
This is one area where the Canadian Alliance would invoke the NOT WITHSTANDING clause in the charter, and why I just cannot fathom voting for a party that endorses invoking this clause for every judgement they don't like.
Actually, here in Ontario a court ruled that our laws prohibiting marijuana use are against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. However the judge suspended his judgement for 1 year to let the federal government rethink the law. So hopefully in 200-and-some-odd days we will be able to smoke freely =)
It's the same sort of deal as when an Ontario court ruled it was unlawfull to tell women they can't go topless...
