Excellent... Never saw that before... looking at ntsysv now, will check out ckconfig in a bit... Just made my life a little bit easier!:)
There wouldn't be an easier way of editing inetd.conf, would there?
That's what I get when I !RTFM
I am truly amazed! Congratulations Nick Mitchell on not trolling/. !
On the topic of distro's, I've used RH, Slack, Mandrake, Debian, SuSe, etc. I personally like them all... preferred at this point is probably RH since it is what I first installed, and learned mostly for my first year running/admin'ing linux.
If RH has (finally) beefed up security, I for one will be forever greatful... gets really annoying having to edit inetd.conf, and go through rc3.d and disable practically EVERYTHING every time I install. I learned from the beginning, and I think this is (read in: should be) industry standard, that you should disable everything by default, and turn services on as necessary, after being sure to patch and update all dependant services.
The article didn't go in depth as to their security enhancement feature, aside from it being configurable during the install... Hopefully what I call secure is what they do too...:)
I agree... Being forced to upgrade has never made me happy, and I'm sure that goes for many other/. readers. How many of you are still running Netscape 4.7?? I tried the upgrade to 6, saw how horribly it runs on my redhat system, and then went back to 4.7 Netscape, with a little mozilla thrown in to play with...
M$ is certainly a bit out of line in my mind by not supporting previous versions of their software. Many people can't upgrade their hardware ($$$) just to get the latest IE.
So if had a 10,000 acre farm, I would be responsible for investigating every square foot (metre?) of said farm, and take a sample of every growing plant on said farm, and bring it in for genetic analysis, otherwise risk being sued for patent infringment?? I don't get it?
Have to agree.... I yelled at our COO when I got here... He had Seti running on a box in the corner for so long that it burned in the Cheap ass DELL monitor. Now it still runs, but the screen is blank...
PS- If you really want to get the most crunching power out of your box, and are running some flavor of winblows (I gotta support the bastards, too... grrr...) then grab the older SETI NT driver. Runs via command line, and increases crunching power by 25% or more...
Hmmm...
Combine the hax0red TiVo with one of the lovely storage devices from mondays' slashdot article and you could store some serious TV time... Commercial free and what you want when you want it.
I'm sounding like a commercial for TiVo/Network Engines, I know...
Anyways, this could make for some interesting TiVo applications. It could also make for more pirating controversy because people will have an easy way of recording _all_ of their movies/shows/etc and freely/easily distributing them via scour or gnutella. The lawyers would have a field day!
Anyways, just my $.02
I'm with you... I have actually used one or two of these "dialer programs" in the past. I had screwed my credit up a couple of years before, and hadn't had a credit card since then. Didn't fell like writing a check, but did feel like seeing some "entertainment" lol...
Pt it on the phone bill... why not... I'm going to pay that anyways... I have credit with them, why not use it? When you get the dialer, there is a disclaimer that you _have_ to scroll though before it will let you continue, and if you don't read it, then you are stupid. It isn't that long! Plus, it tells you straight out that you will be calling some foreign number, and how much you will be paying for it. It also tells you that it will disconnect you from your ISP and redial the LD #.
Where is the scam? You are paying for service, at a premium rate, but you know what you are paying. 900 numbers, which make tons of money, must also be a scam on their list. While you are at it, long distance companies should be right near the top! It doesn't cost them nearly as much as we are paying for it. What a scam!!
Ah... whatever... if people want pron, they'll get it however they can.

Actually, the season premier of the Simpsons this past sunday was the 250th episode...
SO... add 175 minutes to the total already...
I guess thats a few less DVD's...
