  1. sign up to be slashdotted! on Researching the Slashdot Effect? · · Score: 2, Funny

I've been wondering what would happen first if a page (preferrably with large movies) hosted from my computer happened to get slashdotted:

1- the server is reduced to a blob of melted plasic and silicon, or
2- CIS revokes my network connection for life.

Now all I need is a suitable article to submit.

  2. Re:this is ironic... on Rendezvous Developer Stuart Cheshire Interviewed · · Score: 1

Try a serial cable into the mic minijack. Not sure how much force they applied to get the pins so bent.

They were so surprised when it didn't print.

  3. easy, assuming the MP3s are whole ripped albums on Using CDDB to Fill ID3 Information in Existing MP3s? · · Score: 2, Informative

iTunes does have the ability to fill in missing information in some situations. For example, if you have an entire CD you ripped while offline, select the tracks and select "Get CD Track Names" from the Advanced menu. Everything from CDDB will be filled in, even if the songs still have "track1" etc as their names. Not sure if it can account for songs ripped from another encoder/incomplete albums.

  4. Motorola and PowerPC processors on Slashback: Alternatives, Ads, Apple · · Score: 4, Interesting

The funny thing is, Apple hasn't been using PowerPC processors in most macs for some time now. That's right. If you open up your brand new G4 tower, that piece of silicon won't have the PowerPC label. In fact, no processor made by Motorola is made under the PowerPC name. Due to a bit of a hiccup with IBM over licensing the name, they're all merely "PowerPC Compliant" processors. Seems we won't see a PowerPC G5 coming from them after all.

  5. Re:Wouldn't work on me, or most net-savvy Mac user on Software Update Vulnerability · · Score: 3, Interesting

Or would it? All you'd have to do is wait for a legitimate update to be released and mask your software as that update (same filename/size/desc). The end user would have no idea they weren't updating to OS 10.1.6, but rather installing a trojan. Software Update is a trusted source for most users.

  6. It's not a bug, it's a feature! on Software Update Vulnerability · · Score: 3, Interesting

Software Update is convinent, but it only allows you to update Apple software (and the occasional IE bug fix). This bug could just as easily be exploited to allow for a Mac computer lab to auto-update third party software, reducing the hassle of network-wide installs, and potentialy making the lab more secure by fixing bugs in other softare. Apple should provide this option, IMHO.
