  1. "That'll distract the geeks for a week" on Microsoft's Vision Of Future Workplaces · · Score: 1

Sometimes you have to wonder whether they do these things for PR, press, or so that there is something to distract people from the constant stream of security holes being found in their software....

  2. I want photos of the impact on Scramjet Success in Australia · · Score: 1

From 'The Age' newspaper, Melbourne, Australia.

Data was fired off in a capsule after the engine ignited while the rocket was travelling about 8000 kmh. The scramjet then crashed, destroying itself and completing the test.

A rocket at 8000kph is going to make a hell of an impact, does anyone know of photos of the impact site?

  3. Who says university isn't a business? on Elements 116 and 118 are Bogus? · · Score: 2, Interesting

"In this era of corporate misbehavior and overstatement of results who can you trust? Scientific sources, of course."

Seeing most universities are businesses these days
why should we expect the to behave any differently
to any other business? Money and emphasis on growth is the all important thing that every entity must strive for. Lying and misrepresentation are something that a business does every day in order to attract investors, students, customers and employees. Why not lie about your research prowess too?

  4. Re:Would this help independant artists? on CD Copying Kiosks Endorsed in Australia · · Score: 1

I imagine that the 'royalties' from this would be minimally distributed to artists on a pro rata basis for their CD sales.

My fiance's boss is a member of a relatively popular Australian band. Lots of radio airplay, lots of gigs, lots of sales. Royalty cheques are in the order of $20 a month (gee ta!). I copied the band's $30AU CD and bought him a case of beer.

  5. Re:Reality 101 on Georgia Tech Cracks Down on Learning · · Score: 1

The only problem with this is you don't develop the communication skills required in the work place. You are not only going to speak to techies when you hit industry, you will quite often be speaking to people without a clue about IT and have to justify what you are doing it (and why you are spending their money).

Having had practice teaching others helps this immensely.
