Sounds to me like a good comprimise. The government can satisfy demands for a rating system while still allowing "violent" and "offensive" content to be chosen or blocked by the consumer. What's wrong with that. If you don't like V-chips, buy a TV without one. If you don't want to block the channels on your own TV, don't. At least you can still watch what you want (unless you're a child whose parents chose to protect you from the over glamourized Oscar's)
I don't really think that I want an industry funded organization (profit or non-profit) controlling the Linux kernel. Do we really want Linux manipulated by huge lobbyists (Microsoft) to maximize their profits by funding a non-profit Org? As far as I am concerned Linus is doing a great job. Remember everyone still can use Linux how ever they want.
I have recently accepted an internship offer from IBM. We will be developing a 64 bit SMP Linux kernel as well as some clustering stuff. Should be pretty interesting. AFAIK most of the development in these areas is done with full-time paid programmers such as IBM.
P.S. It was mentioned awhile back on Slashdot that there doesn't seem to be many internships relating to UNIX/Linux. A few phone calls and emails landed me this 9 month internship with IBM. For any aspiring Linux enthusiasts: The jobs are out there:-)
I have seen these on my former favorite place to check the weather.
New machines, network links, and resources should be automatically assimilated.
Looks like Microsoft has been practicing this for years.Sounds to me like a good comprimise.
