  1. Link, etc on IBM's Virtual Helpdesk For The Masses · · Score: 2

    Non-subscription link

Hmm, a REAL Virtual Helpdesk, an interesting idea - but how well does it work in practice? Surely it'll require some intelligent configuration to work well for a big company - and if the initial configuration is fluffed, will it spell trouble for the future as it sets off on the wrong footing?

Remember that many companies with 10,000+ employees will be running a lot of in-house software, and the machine will be expected to cope with questions concerning this as well.

I could be wrong of course, and it could be free-standing all singing, all-dancing, these are just a couple of initial concerns...

  2. Solar Technology on NASA Sends One Up; DoD Shoots One Down · · Score: 2

I think it's great that we're seeing more and more solar technology being developed for different uses - however I think that we need to see more solar technology being used in construction.

There should be no excuse for new buildings to be built without solar panels in the roof to try and capture as much of the sun's rays as possible as "free" energy. Imagine how much this could ease the burden on the world's energy providers, then again, why should they promote this technology - they're the ones making the cash.

I know a lot of houses do exist with solar panels, but I still don't think there are enough - at the moment they are predominantly in "sunny" areas - but I'm sure there are still benefits to be gained in some of the cooler climates...

Hmm, think about the budget for films now...

If games take off in the same way as films did, then the $50 per game would certainly pay for the development cost, even if the development cost was comparable. Think about how much you pay on average per different film you watch, compared to how much you pay on average per different game you play... There's big money to be made in the gaming industry as it takes off over time.

Hmm, I have never owned a car, I often walk around the office(s) to get stuff or speak to people, I live on the top floor of a house, 6 flights of stairs whenever I enter/leave - there is no lift. At work the lifts are the only way between floors, as the stair doors are all one-way to the stairs - you can only access the ground floor that way. If ever I get a takeaway I walk the 2 miles to the takeaway and back.

I am 25 and seriously overweight.

I'm thinking of getting a bike instead of walking/taking the metro/bus/tram, but however nice your suggestions sound - they're not the solution to everyone's problems. If life were that easy I'd be far fitter than I am. I don't eat excessively, but the only way I'm going to get fit is to actively take more excercise, and that takes up spare time - which I put a very high value on.

Hmm, well that makes sense, but why lay them out in a grid as in the third photo, and that doesn't explain the big geometric diamond shape in the first photo.

Also I started by seeing one long straight line from the plane, then they became more an more clustered, until there was a mass of them in a grid (as per the third photo). After this they started easing off and eventually disappeared altogether. So once the grid and the diamond are explained, I might be able to accept pipelines as an answer...

NB: In the original post "are not roads" should have read "are roads" - sorry!

Hmm, whilst on the topic of strange lines, I was wondering if anyone here could tell me what these strange geometric lines are that I saw when I was flying over Russia (at about 35,000 ft) on the way back to Europe after a holiday in Japan:
    Big white diamond
    Thick line
    Grid lines

I do not think these are not roads, rivers, or pipelines - all of which have been suggested to me so far...

I think that if you were in charge of a large LAN, you'd have more to worry about than a bit of smut - besides, you think you have the ability to block access where so many people have failed before you, and what about emails? People can find love and romance through that medium just as well as any other.

  11. The wrong kind of advertising! on Internet Ad Network Commentary · · Score: 1

I think the problem with advertising on the internet, is that everyone is advertising their own site in the banners - there is rarely any real "substance" behind them.

If money is to be made, then we need to see more 'real' advertisments on the internet, and less of the standard junk services that people are trying to push into your face. When was the last time you saw a Mars Bar or Coca Cola being advertised in a banner?

Advertising just needs to look at the model used in television, you don't just see adverts for other TV channels - this is purely the internet method. No, you see advertisments for washing powers, cloths, consumables, household objects. Real stuff that you can touch and feel.

Until the internet reaches this level of advertising, it'll still be an immature media.

BT has been dragging it's heels excessivly over DSL - I expected great things when I first heard of the technology, and I thought that BT would be one of the first major operators to adopt it as the new technology to replace ISDN - then I moved to Belgium, the telecoms company here was just completing ADSL trials when I moved out here, and I signed up shortly after it became available to the general public.

It's cheap, it's fast, it's efficient, and it's popular. In the UK I get the impression that it is slow(er), more expensive, and the availability also strikes me as poor.

I would say that BT is letting it's custoers down in a big way over this, and Oftel have also been negligent in not giving the incumbrant teelecom company the kick up the rear that it so richly deserved. Hopefully the new regulator Oftcom will have more teeth and not be afraid to use them...

I've got a 9110 as well, and it's one of the most useful tools I could imagine. I often need to send out bulk SMSs to people to keep them informed of situations - so I just set up a distribution list, and send them all at once to that.

The speakphone is amazing - even better than the one on my landline, and as for the ability to store contacts - I have the contact details of every internal employee in the IT Group avalible at my fingertips - over 1000 of them. That's something I NEED - it's pretty much non-negociable, and I haven't seen many other mobile phones that could handle that (ericsson do one that I know of).

You need a keyboard for telnet? So do I - and I have a telnet application right there on my phone, along with an e-mail client and a web browser. Also nice to have my calendar synced with Outlook and ready to be accessed at any time I need it as well.

All in all I thought the 9110 rocked, but the 9210 almost has me drooling in anticipation.

It was mentioned that the 9110 has a 486 CPU, and the author of the message wrongly assumed the same of the 9210 - it has a 32-bit ARM9-based RISC CPU instead. I'll certainly consider upgrading when it's released some time next year.
