Interstellar Human travel is the only way to ensure survival of the human race beyond any one single cataclysmic event. If the Earth gets destroyed - or more likely, if WE destroy the Earth - this is the only true way we would be able to continue our existence.
The important thing is finding a way to ensure that we don't land on some crappy planet without internet access - then it would certainly be a mistake.
