C++ sucks, QT sucks even more. I prefer a simple C API for GUI but there is none. FLTK is pretty close, but it is c++, and it is also not as sophisticated as QT.
As a long time linux user, I lost interest in KDE almost from the very beginning. I totally agree that KDE is unnecessarily complicated.
I am going the route like KDE->gnome->openbox->dwm.
Now I am very satisfied with dwm with dmenu and no interest in microsoft and apple at all.
We were in the same boat as you and now we got a complete solution.
Our software TorApp Guilloche Designer is for security printing and the equivalents usually costs more than $200K.
We choosed to build it as a service and we are free of any piracy issues now.

No need to run for Win7, Linux and osx are better options and will make life much easier.
