  1. Maybe you should try a modern distro on Groklaw Tries Their Own Linux Usability Study · · Score: 2, Informative

Maybe you should try a distro which is aimed at being user friendly, eg Mandrake, SUSE, Xandros etc. Their install is defintely as easy, if not easier than Windows. Most of the time, it just consists of hitting the next button.

They do! No one using almost any major distro has to download dependencies. Mandrake has urpmi, Redhat- Yum (or apt-get), SUSE-Yast, all of these take care of dependencies.

There are still plenty of things to be fixed on the desktop for linux, but installing software is no longer one of them! It's as easy (if not easier) to install software with linux than with windows. With windows you have to find the software on the internet, download it and double click. With Mandrake (for example) you go to the menu entry which says install software, tick what you want to install, and it installs it and all the dependencies. It's hard to get easier than that!

    Currently, this does not exist.

In retrospect "useless" is a bit harsh, lacking in full functionality would be more accurate. I think OO is a really good alternative to MS Office and has some great features which I miss when I use MS Office, and I'm hugely impressed by how much 1.1 improved over 1.0,

So Happy Birthday to OO.org and many more to come I hope!!

  5. Pity it's useless for many academics... on Happy 3rd Birthday To OpenOffice.org · · Score: 1

I really wish they would hurry up and fix the word count so you could count selections and count (or not count) footnotes. Unfortunately its pretty useless for many academics and postgrads until it lets you do this.

I just find it amazing that such an essential feature has still not been addressed despite many bug reports and feature requests.

I'm looking forward to 2.0 where apparently this is being addressed.

  6. They still ignore the need for a decent word count on OpenOffice.org Hits 1.1 · · Score: 1

It's a pity they still ignore their users and haven't put in a usable word count yet. It's amazing that they continue to ignore such a basic feature, which basically makes openoffice unusable to many people who write professionally.

They need to let people count selections and include and exclude footnotes, at the very least, before it can ever be considered a decent wordprocessor.

  7. Only partly Ridiculous on Who Owns Your Culture? · · Score: 1

I know that people's immediate reaction is to call this ridiculous, but perhaps they should think for a moment. In an absolute sense it is ridiculous that Maori (ps Maori is the plural, please don't use Maoris) should be able to sue over the use of polynesian cultural symbols, and language. For one thing it would indicate that there is one group of Maori and they are all that are allowed to use these terms and language. This is obviously nonsense. But in a relative sense, we live in a world where intellectual property is a very important commodity and why should a European company be able to profit from Maori culture. I'm sure that if a Maori iwi produced a Lago clone thay would get sued pretty fast. It is imperative that indigenous people try and prevent the commodification of their culture. This does not meant that noone can speak Maori, use Maori names etc. All it means is that noone should be able to use these in a commercial sense.
