I couldn't agree more with the character assination of Faramir.
The question is: Why? So the audience could see a ring wraith bob on top of an oversized fruit bat in front of Frodo?
Faramir wasn't allowed to show the nobility of his character, and present the contrast of his personality and wizard-influenced choices with that of his brother's.
The other big gripe I concerns the ending. Gandalf, Eomer, and a couple of hundred riders wipe out 10,000 orcs? In the book it took thousands of hurons to do that.
I'm not totally down on the film (Gandalf's fight with the balrog at the beginning was magnificent), but I'm wincing at the "liberties" I imagine Jackson is going to take with the third film.
Actually, electrons in wire travel about as fast as you can walk. Yes, it's true; look it up in an intro to electrical theory book.
The electric fields induced by the moving charges (electrons) move at a fraction of the speed of light depending on the the material inside the transmission line. Light propagates in materials with dielectric constants closer to air faster.
For all java promises greatly enhanced productivity over C++, there should be a huge selection of client side java apps to choose from. But they are not there.
Why? The GUI is dog slow and ugly.
How much better would java be for the client side if, for example, high quality bindings to wxWindows, gtk+, or qt existed? Then the GUI could be snappy and java could execute all of the logic. If a cross platform toolkit were used, the program would be cross platform.
Swing is a poor substitute for a native cross platform toolkit.
anygui is not an IBM project -- it was just reported on in IBM developer works. If they write an article on java, does it mean they invented java? Sheesh.
From the website:
The purpose of the anygui project is to create an easy-to-use, simple, and generic module for making graphical user interfaces in Python. It's main feature is that it will work transparently with many different GUI packages on most platforms.
You can use it to write a generic GUI app and it will scan the gui toolkits on your box and choose the best one to use for your app.
A successful project with analogous goals is anydbm You can make generic operations on databases, and it will work on mysql and postgresql. It's already a part of the standard python distribution.
Actually, you have it backwards. A recent finding found out that, while short telomeres mean that a cell will not be able to reproduce for many more generations, when the genetic material of a cell with short telomeres is used for cloning, a longer lived offspring results.
Why? It was speculated that the cloned cell made up a bunch more telomeres than normal to make up for the deficit.
Isn't his net worth in the hundreds of billions of dollars? Just think what you could do with that kind of money. Personally fund a mission to mars, found a lunar colony, launch a network of LEO solar satellites...
