fwiw, we use a combination of postgresql, postgis, geoserver, a few in-house developed servlets and apache or nginx on server side for our (rather local-oriented) geo visualization solutions (http://www.gaeaplus.si/ ; non-english, sorry). provides: standards compliance and ability to connect almost any client to it, decent performance, rich geometry support, simple administration, replication and load balancing.
I never looked back or considered anything else since.
