  1. My computer had cancer but it's in remission now on Ballmer Calls Linux "A Cancer" · · Score: 1

I uninstalled Office97. No, wait, there it is again. shucks. More surgery, chemo, radio. When will my computer be free of Office97? But seriously, shame on Ballmer. He and his MS heavies are so transparently trying to do down the open source movement. . 1

  2. Re:Quite a few South American languages... on Linux Distribution Round-Up · · Score: 1

Here in Guyana we speak English. They speak French in French Guyana (funny that). Try to tell the French that theirs is not a "major western language" and you'll have a debate on votre mains. You're not the only one to ignore these countries. A combo box on HP's support site offered Vietnam and Hong Kong in the America's but not Guyana, Suriname or French Guyana. Bonjour.

  3. Beaconpower website light on technical details... on Flywheel UPS · · Score: 2

...but nice technology. I worked for three years with a company who had their own home-made version - 15Kw motor, huge (way bigger than 150lb) flywheel, 10Kva alternator providing power to servers and computers. No vacuum or super bearings but it worked like a charm. We switched over from main (275Kva) genset to small (55Kva) at lunchtimes and at the end of the working day. All this in Guyana where the power company simply couldnt deliver enough power. And I have watched "smart" ups boxes smoulder and fry...

  4. Mandrake Corporate Server is a quality product. on Mandrake Shakeup · · Score: 1

I switched from RH6x to Mandrake Corporate Server last year. I find it excellent. One possible reason Mandrake are in financial trouble is that they didn't sell an english distribution of Corporate Server. Only a French one. So I had to get it from CheapBytes thus robbing Mandrake of revenue. (Yes, I know I could have downloaded it but I live in a third world country where 600Mb downloads are folly) I would gladly purchase a couple of copies of an English Corporate Server distro from Mandrake.

  5. Re:Is it really all that? on Silicon Valley as a Religion · · Score: 1

"all over the world" Absolutely. The revolution is in the process of going global. I live in an arsewipe developing country where the TOTAL bandwidth is about three T1's. But it's really great. Real life, clean air, 80,000sq miles of empty terrain. Okay, so I will not make more than 30k this year. But I have 20 species of birds living in the swamp opposite my house. And fine rum is two bucks a bottle. The Silicon Valley revolution is about money. What else makes people put up with high rents, crap air quality and traffic?! By 2003, 60% of online spending will be outside the US. Meantime - speaking of globalisation... An online supplier (okay, Egghead), from whom I have purchased before, refused my UK credit card last week because (and I quote) "we've upgraded our software". I hope the whiz-kids who wrote that upgrade all got stock options... Love from Guyana.
