What will these guys do in 5 years when a RAMBUS (the company with a lawyer to engineer ratio of 500 to 1) head lawyer claims that they own all the patents on the microprocessor, and on printing presses and demands royalties?
The educational system is where everything that is going wrong today started.
Why should it surprise anyone that government schools largely produce ignorance, apathy, acceptance of government control, and desire for more of it?
Government schools serve none other than the government. Government control and funding of schools have increased inversely porportional to the rate of decline of learning.
So long as education is run by the government, it will continue to decline.
One reason, I think, why geeks and techies are perceived as such a threat, is because we learn largely INDEPENDANTLY of the state-run educational machine. We tend to be free thinkers, and that runs contrary to a government that is lusting after greater and greater power and control.
For instance, I can just say "10th Amendment" on./ (and have in many of my posts) and I've never been asked to clarify... It's the most abused right we have...
Knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, particularly Amendments 9 and 10 has been supressed. Instead, students are taught how great government "intervention" and "help" is to the "war" on poverty (lost), and the "war" on drugs (also lost). Funding of BOTH those "wars" account for most of the rising tide of confiscatory taxation, and loss of civil liberty.
Before long, there won't be anyone left with the INFORMATION to look at the "war" on poverty and the "war" on drugs and say "the emperor has no clothes".
I'll make this direct accusation now. The Salem, NH police are welcome to try to march down to North Carolina and do something about it:
The Salem, NH police is an unlawful goon squad guilty of multiple criminal counts.
No, we don't know the whole story. But, based on the AP story, which came basically from the goons, uh, I mean cops, clearly put the defendant in the worst possible light. It's FUD.
We can't even SEE the website to judge for ourselves. Even IF the sites were obscene, the police acted without authority to shut them down. Stuff like that has to be determined in court.
It's a no brainer to determine who is the victim, and who the Nazi SS stormtrooper wannabes are.
I did that IN elementary school. You had to be there to understand, I never EVER would have actually done it.
I was one of those young geeks who was basically tortured throught school. As were many/.'ers.
Today the Pinkertons (there was a/. story on this) are trolling schools collecting "geek profiles" to be sold to schools/police. How is this any different from how Hitler started out with the Jews? It isn't, in fact, it's frighteningly similar.
There is a hysterical wave of ignorant technophobia sweeping this country. Our whole economy now is based on high technology. Few people outside the Tech fields understand it.
This is demonstrated by the fact that the Salem, NH police just HAD to throw in the inmaterial fact that there were "hacker books" in his posession.
Of course, this growing persecution of technical people (geeks) will lead to two things:
1. Economic collapse
2. A dark age
Next thing you know, technicians will be accused of "witchcraft" and burned at the stake along with our cats. It could happen, and in fact, in a sense, it's already happening.
True, there are others. While I'm in favor of sending cop-killers to the chair (as I am in favor of sending ALL murderers to the chair, no exceptions), I also think that crimes comitted by government agents should also be higher crimes.
But who do you send to arrest police? Who will prosecute a corrupt local judge? In fact, in most smaller states and areas, what lawyer will even DEFEND you from such?
As a federal judge, Kaplan not only had the power, but the DUTY to judge the Constitutionality of the DMCA. And it's pretty obvious that there are at least parts of it that conflict with the Constitutions's articles pertaining to patents/copyrights and fair use.
If Kaplan isn't stupid, then the only other option is corrupt. Neither attribute is honorable.
Unfortunately, there are many more Judge Kaplans out there, and that's probably what happened in this case. Some Judge Kaplan rubber-stamped a warrant for the police. Why? Well, the police is never wrong...
I was like that in HS... In fact, I once drew elaborate plans for the destruction of my elementary school... confiscated by the teacher... In 1985. Thank God it wasn't in 1995, or else I'd be in prison instead of working as an Linux engineer for the largest computer company in the world.
Not to worry, my anti-Reno-Police-State-American data is stored where not even J. Edgar Hoover could find it...
Nyaa. Nahh!!! Try to catch me, Janet! You are my bitch! I'm more dangerous than anyone you've ever persecuted. Why? Because I THINK!!!! Unlike most of your CNN-educated "consumer-citizens".
Janet Reno is the MOST lawless attorney general ever. You forget, her "justice" department was the one that persecuted Bernie S. and Kevin Mitnick... Ashcroft would (if he holds true) laugh this out of court, and in fact, prosecute the real criminals, the Salem, NH police.
Correct. Anyone who conspired to wrongfully arrest this kid and maliciously prosecute him should face felony charges.
Won't happen, but legally it should. Cops are the "sacred cows" of America. Though they DO perform a noble service (sometimes) their MOST illegal and offesnive acts are often excused.
I hope he gets a good shark and sues their ass off.
"They must not have any REAL criminals running around."
(WARNING) slander and obscenity and misuse of computer coming!!!
Cops are cowards...
They'd rather sit beside I-95 munching on Crispy Cremes and clocking speeders, or busting so-called "hackers" rather than going after burgelers, muggers and rapists... Why, you might get SHOT doing that!
What he is going through amounts to "cruel and unusual punishment". He isn't guilty of ANY crime at all. I hope he gets a smart lawyer who makes the Salem PD bleed and pay and bleed some more.
Also, if the prosecutors had any integrity, they'd file charges against the police for corruption and abuse of power.
I feel so strongly about this (personal experience) I'm willing to contribute towards his defense.
It's not possible to slander the police department. You can, however, slander specific police officers, but that's a civil matter. According to the law, you can be sued, but not arrested for slander.
It was taken down so that we couldn't judge it for ourselves. That's why there is a 1st amendment... But it doesn't matter of the police and courts are so corrupt as to ignore it.
Hoard your guns people, because armed citizens, ultimately, is the only check and balance that forces the government to obey the law.
Sadly, this isn't the USA anymore... We are becoming more closed minded, more superstitious, and authoritarian.
Those tendancies, of course, lead to a decline in learning (already happening), and ultimately, a dark age.
I think the USA will be in a "dark age" where learning and technology cease to advance, and indeed, decline in less than 50 years unless people and government start becoming more tolerant and less sensitive to things that offend them.

I'm totally against Zero Tolerance.
Zero Tolerance=Zero Thought.
Zero Tolerance is "justice" for those who are too lazy, too stupid, or BOTH to adequatey and FAIRLY judge each and every individual situation.
They don't even treat all MURDERS with "Zero Tolerance", why should a standard like that be leagal to apply to lesser acts?

Well, this IS happening... People are leaving the liberal-fascist Northeast for the South and West, where some freedom still exists.
According to the 2000 census..
Not to worry, my anti-Reno-Police-State-American data is stored where not even J. Edgar Hoover could find it...

You also forgot...
Dispatched 16 cop cars to the Interstate to clock speeders (revenue patrol)....
Woman murdered in Fayetteveille? Sent one cop there to investigate. Why, someone may get hurt that way.
The police are no more than tax collectors these days. Therefrore they deserve no more respect than the IRS.

It's not art. It's political speech. It's much easier to prove that.
"a nation where police scientists falsify lab tests"
One need look no further than Fred Zain, chief of the WV State police crime lab in WV.
"He is charged with misuse of computer system information, a felony. "
How can you misuse information gained from a government public web site?
What he is going through amounts to "cruel and unusual punishment". He isn't guilty of ANY crime at all. I hope he gets a smart lawyer who makes the Salem PD bleed and pay and bleed some more.

"I feel sorry for the poor innocents at the Salem, Mass. PD"
I feel a lot sorrier for the innocent masses of Salem, NH who are living under a reign of terror.
It's not possible to slander the police department. You can, however, slander specific police officers, but that's a civil matter. According to the law, you can be sued, but not arrested for slander.
How can a site protesting a government entity (police) be obscene by the Supreme Court's definitions?
It can't be.
I want to see it. And my right to, as well as the right of that unfortunate kid to display it, have been violated by the Salem police department.
It was taken down so that we couldn't judge it for ourselves. That's why there is a 1st amendment... But it doesn't matter of the police and courts are so corrupt as to ignore it.
