We had a major international link with Telstra, our (partially) Govt. owned Telco/ISP a week ago and the load of redirecting traffic to an alternative international link knocked down a few other core routers. For more fun, we then had a fire at the power sub-station near the Paddington Telstra Phone Exchange... which holds much of NSW (the most populated state) core internet routers for this ISP. And that knocked that out.
That night, Australian pings were about 50%+ packet loss. Internal redundancy! Bah!
