The saddest part about some of the most obsessed gamers is that they do in fact see the game like a drug and they are even proud of it!
Spend an hour on the online RPG (in which no RP is actually involved) Everquest. You'll hear people call it EverCrack, brag about how long they stayed up last night playing, how much RL (real life) sucks and generally compare their level of addiction to the game.
You say it makes you sick to hear the author refer to gaming as electronic crack, and maybe you think he should "get a life and leave ours alone" and by doing so group yourself with all gamers in a community of "us" who are being persecuted and "our" lives that should be left alone; but if you think that it's only non-gamers who compare games to drugs then you are definitely not in touch with the community at all.
