  1. Re:What a monoculture! on Part One: Up, Up, Down, Down · · Score: 1
Makes me wonder how you ever got onto a computer or heaven forbid found your way onto this website with such a one dimensional view of technology.
Gaming has exploded in the past few years until, according to Steven Poole's book Trigger Happy, videogame sales now equal movie ticket receipts. Sales of game consoles and software in the United States will top $17 billion a year by 2003 (the music industry, by comparison, reported revenues of $15 billion last year).
This isn't a lie. It is the still-forming face of entertainment. Software entertanment will sell more than the music industry by 2003... think about it! And what makes it a culture is the definate fact that software entertainment is drifting towards an inter-personal online environment. When human interaction is involved, the enjoyment and replayability is infinatley higher because responsed aren't canned - your interacting with other humans! As the quality of life improves (like it's been doing since the agricultural revolution) the amount of time your average person has for leisure goes up. As the fruits of the latest revolution (technological) ripen, we are seeing an explosion in entertainment titles simply because one dosen't have to work for 10 hours a day anymore to sustain a comfortable living. I found this article to be one of the more insightful pieces i've read here.
