The most normal reaction of a normal server to a slashdot story is to throw a tantrum at all the attention it is receiving and pack up for the day. At the least, I can credit the software creators to have set up a good system with reasonable bandwidth for the server. But okay, it will take a lot more to actually get me to try that stuff.
At my company, I'm using XP and find that it works best when you do the following.
1. Disable system restore facility 2. system properties - advanced - performance - check best performance. 3. Check swap file settings to suitable size. 4. remove hibernation option 5. remove eye-candy:: desktop fancies 6. use firefox for internet access, initially slow as cache is built up...... 7. remove indexing service 8. and yeah, get rid of bonzi buddy, yahoo bar, lycos bar, msn explorer, outlook express, etc,:D
one study done on virtual teams that spent a long time interacting via the internet, and then brought together for a brief time period to interact spent most of their time just introducing themselves to each other.
apparently, interaction with each other is more than just talking to one another,(mail qualifies for that, or say video attachments on mails)..... the eye contact part is not somthing to be trifled with.
what ultimately this boils down to is what your parents have been telling you for ages, "dont talk to strangers", well, granted that on the net you cant keep *not* talking to others......... but what it means is that one must have a way to maintain separate id's for different purposes.
slashdot has a cool way to ensure email id's dont get picked up by bots, still on other sites one cant be so *sure*. I maintain one id for personal stuff, one id for professional purposes........ and one id that i use all over, in every website that needs me to enter an id, to which the *Confirmation* will be sent, and that is ALL that I use it for. I hardly check mail in that, but the last time i did, there were 983 mails unread, talk about privacy !!!
until we can find a better way to workaround spammers, guess they are here to stay, its up to us to figure out ways to avoid them.
lets try and appreciate the fundamental priciple of life, he's got the lucre and the russkies are willing.not to forget that according to the bbc article, he was with nasa for 14 years
i dont rationalise only on money but the point is that he is not doing anything against the project, and considering that he has partially financed the cash strapped russian project is welcome,as it enables them to keep up their end of the responsibility.
they should also be credited with some intelligence, they kept mir in orbit far beyond its expected life time, against all odds.they definitely dont want to carry a guy in space because it just caught their fancy.
hope the project is not affected by the unneccesary politics ( against the backdrop of the present diplomatic showdown of oneupmanship )
all fine and good as it goes, but think of this.
the big artists make a lot of moolah - and have a ball of a time.it is the lesser known artists that the licencing aims to protect from other artists, lets say, who are inspired by them.
