  1. Traffic Monitoring when not using DD-WRT on Ask Slashdot: How To Monitor Your Own Bandwidth Usage? · · Score: 1

I have a D-Link DIR-655 that I haven't taken the time to update from the factory firmware. No traffic usage monitoring at all in the stock firmware, so I grabbed a "UPnP Gateway Traffic Monitor" applet that runs in Windows.

    I'm using this: http://www.d-bross.com/en/downloads/

The software seems totally lame, but apparently the key phrase to search for is "UPnP Traffic Monitor" and there are a couple little cruddy things that will monitor your WAN interface in some way.

A simple not-quite-perfect fix for monitoring traffic, says I.

  2. Apple Newton on Technologies that Have Exceeded Their Expectations? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The Apple Newton is, in my opinion, a great example of technology living beyond its expected lifetime and abilities:

There's a very strong and active user community, plenty of help, and gobs of software. An incredibile amount of work has been poured into the device with addons like wireless networking, CompactFlash ATA support, Shoutcast and MP3 playing, web serving, and desktop synching. All this adds to the Newton's built in PIM, notetaking, and email support.

I use my Newton for a telnet client, guitar tuner, notepad/to-do lister, and MP3 player.

The first usable Newton was put out in 1996 and the most powerful and expandable Newton was released middle of 97. The thing's lived a long life and looks like its gonna keep on chugging for a long time more, expecially since they can be found for just over $100 on eBay and the continued support of the Newton community. I know I won't ever ditch it.

  3. Why I bother with a PDA.... on Do People Really Use Their PDAs? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I need and use my PDA because I can't remember shit. I use my beloved Newton 2100 on an almost hourly basis during the workday. I work at a Las Vegas showroom/theatre and the PDA keeps track of the production shows, corporate events, employees/network users, and how much time I spend on various projects.

The offices are filled with HP 2100 printers with infrared ports, so I can print off an email or task list for others just by pointing the Newton at a printer. With the WiFi card I stay shelled into the firewall server to respond to IM's or Emails, and thanks to VNC I can make changes to the Exchange server on the fly.

At home the PDA continues to serve for remembering what the heck is going on next weekend, for keeping track of my user base, and changing the channel on the TV when the wife stashes the remote on her side of the bed.

But, what it really boils down to is that if I didn't have the Newton, I'd still walk around with a paper notebook in my back pocket. At least the Newt allows me to play an mp3 or flip on the backlight to use as a flashlight in the depths of the unlit storage space at work.

  4. LiveJournal/Blogger SMS Updater on Creative Applications for SMS? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I wrote myself a little SMS -> LiveJournal gateway. The script idles behind an email address on my box and knows that any messages from my cellphone email address to its address should be punted through JLJ which updates LiveJournal.

Kinda lame, but its neat to update my LJ from the center of DisneyLand from the cellphone.

  5. Re:Y2K error due to my sorry perl script on An Open Letter to the Y2K Bug · · Score: 1

Oh, **NOW** I'm bummed: The Renegade BBS software not only doesn't run under a PentiumII, Celeron, or AMD Athlon, it also is NOT Y2K Compliant.

I brought out my backup of the old Renegade BBS I used to run back two years ago "just to see" and sure enough, everything date related on my 05-11 Renegade version is kaput: User last-login & first login dates are wacked, all files appear as new uploads each time a user logs in, and more. GRRR. This sucks. I'm really dissapointed. To Cott Lang, Patrick Spence, and whomever "maintains" the code now:

    OPEN SOURCE IT.

    Please.

  6. Y2K error due to my sorry perl script on An Open Letter to the Y2K Bug · · Score: 1

Me and my (soon to be) wife have a web site which includes a perl script-based counter and logging gizmo so we can figure out who's been to the site every day.

    It uses something similiar to:

    ($mday,$mon,$year,$wday,) = localtime(time()); print LOG $wday ." ". $mon ."/". $mday ."/". $year;

so, the logs flipped from "12/31/99" to "01/01/100"

    Der, my dumb.

    $year = $year + 1900;

Blah, at home I use Pokemon characters that fit the machine...

Ditto here. At work we're also forced to use dumb tree names.. Ash, oak, pine, fir, fig, blah blah. But my personal machines are much more fun.

pikachu is my laptop, my faithful little companion (even if it is grey...).
Bulbasaur is my dual pentium web and email server; big, sturdy, and hard working.
Squirtle is my gaming machine, whereas Charmander is our ornery Windows98 computer.

  8. My Two Toshiba's on Processor Upgrade for an Old Notebook? · · Score: 1

I have two Toshiba laptops.. The first being a 486-80 T2450CD with 16 megs. The only way to get to its guts is to strip it of all its plastic casing, keyboard, and PCMCIA slots.. Only to find that the hard drive is hidden UNDER the motherboard, not accessable until one continues to strip the system even more. The CPU was most definatly soldered to the motherboard.

My nice new used (Thanks eBay!) Toshiba 410CDT P90's case also has been ripped off, out of curosity, and once again, the CPU is hidden deep within the machine, soldered to the backboard. There wern't any jumpers to be found, and CMOS/BIOS/whatever had no provisions for setting speeds. The hard drive and RAM were easy upgrades, but CPU was locked in. :^/ On the other hand, it runs FreeBSD great, full Active-Matrix x11, and even the sound card mostly works.

  9. Hmph. Well... My only glitch today... on 9/9/99: News? Nein! · · Score: 1

My "Domain Controlling" NT Server crapped out and no one could log into the network.. Which threw my boss into hysterics about the whole Y2K issue. Grrrr. So, because I didn't get all raptured or whatever, I celebrated and bought myself a nifty old laptop off of eBay! whoo hoo!

It doesn't stream, but if you have time for 8 megs to download, then visit:

and see if that will help! :)
