I voted in my first Presidential election by absentee ballot. I'm proud to say that I'm registered in the swing state of Maine and I, too, voted for Ralph Nader. I've always been interested in politics, but never have I been so energized for one cause. After sending in my ballot, I felt that part of me, that American kind of rebellious pride of righteousness come alive! It was truly exciting.
In fact, I've been so energized by politics as of late, I'm not just a Computer Science major, but a Political Science major, as well. I believe in the progressive movement, and will make it happen, through voting, discussing the issues with people, and by helping out on some level in my home state.
I thought on election day, after my incredible transformation into a fervent Nader supporter and learning all the issues, that I could come onto Slashdot and make a great statement or something. But chorder beat me to it. Even down to the minute details, like being up all night for no reason. But that doesn't really matter. He(?) speaks for me. I, too, read the Michael Moore letter of the day and was inspired.
I hope every out there feels as good about voting as I did.
I believe Nader's usage of the word "like" was merely a faux pas. I believe his real intent was not to 'tell' you what you do and don't like but to represent what the majority wants to see in their future. I doubt anyone would want to see tax breaks in place for pollution and sprawl (two key environmental disasters that are destroying our furute) over breaks on food and honest labor. I wish we could not be so nitpicky and look at what the candidates are actually saying.
I'm unclear as to how the code for these emulators is written. If it is because of reverse engineering, then I'm quite opposed and think that Nintendo is well within it's rights to oppose such pirating. But, if it is developed in a vacuum-like environment, a totally separate operation, then I think Nintendo should mind it's own business.
I'm very shocked to hear of such stifling of creativity happening at one of Linux's Corporate leaders. I am especially shocked after the response to comments I made about corporate violate of Linux. The responses from the likes of Chris DiBona, mandrake, and Alan Cox were enough to make me believe that companies like RedHat would be supporting movements like Enlightenment.
In the words of Rasterman: "They [RedHat] don't believe users really count - corporates and 'partners' count and what they percieve as the 'business world that wants an exact windows clone' counts."
Is it just me, or is something wrong with this picture?
I agree with the thought that this will never happen. Barring all technical aspects, there are 3 questions that need to be answered.
1- Will the people take it seriously?
Does it seem like too futuristic an idea? Will the people believe that this can actually happen?
2- Will the government take it seriously?
We all know how the government handles the regulation of new technological fields. Will they recognize this right away or wait till many problems arise?
3- How will these two groups handle a new form of transportation?
Will the public be willing to learn how to fly a miniature aircraft. And how will the government respond and regulate? Will they handle it Internet-style and wait until the market is incredibly huge. How strict will the regulations be? Would they even allow such a thing to happen?
As you can see, there are many questions that need answering before such a thing can take place. This would be a major change in society. Insurance rates would skyrocket;-)
A nice article overall... I just have some comments on Corporations...
I like the idea that all these powerplayers are getting totally immersed in linux development. That can only serve to better the community. However, I think these companies need to make sure that their employees work well together as a team. I don't think there needs to be a distinction between team players and superstars. A person can be both.
Also, I'm a tad bit skeptical on having total linux development go into the hands of a corporation. I suppose I'm a bit of a Stallmanist. I feel that Linux definately needs to remain a community oriented project. So far it's going well. But as we dawn a new era of Linux development, I feel it's key to remain non-corporate.
yeah hi... let me clarify my own comments. I did not know they were DoS attacks. Those are lame. But, that doesn't explain the 0, Troll rating on my last post. They were thought out and as I wrote them, I sought to add to the conversation. I do NOT believe that comments should be moderated down just because the moderator doesn't have the same beliefs as the author. That's censorship. Censorship is not cool. Let me just say, anyone who censors something just because they don't like what the person has to say is no better than the FBI or the people who sent DoS attacks on them. I thought we were more enlightened than that.
Usually I scorn cracking. I find that it gives the hacking community a bad name (most often by the sensationalizing, story-telling media). But, in this case, it's an exception to the rule, IMHO. I'm not saying everyone should go out and crack the FBI's website, but in the light of all the recent (and not so recent) raids performed by the FBI, I don't look down upon this particular act.
I would also like to say that I enjoy sticking it to the Man as much as the next guy, but this is one of the rare occasions where I wouldn't care about something like this.
btw- pardon my inabaility to articulate ideas today... I've got a cold and school is pissing me off.
Hey man, i don't think that sneaking into movies is such a great thing to do. Look at all the time and effort that went into the creation of this movie. Given, it's already made a crapload of money... but that doesn't mean it's not deserved. Mr. Anonymous Coward, it's time for you to face up to responsibilities.
Anybody know how Macromedia actually stands on the open source issue? Seeing as how they are a big imaging player, I think it would be a big victory to get them to open source something...
ok... I'm still confused as far as how moderator status is obtained... can someone explain this one to me? Also, how is the moderator status used? I've been trying to follow these slashnotes for a while... hopefully someone can clear this subject up for me...

I'm sickened and saddened by Bowie's decision.
Am I the only one who thinks SDMI stands for SoDoMI?
