    Never mind the consultants.

What we should be grateful for is the kick up the ass that company managers got. I used to work for a medium sized University in the South East of the UK. Our Computing Director was happily telling the Vice Chancellor that there were no Y2K problems >-(

Anyhow - some local managers who were normally complacent about allocating time for routine maintenance did start filling their pants at the thought of what *might* go wrong.

So us admins worked pretty hard checking and patching - and having official time to do so (ie they stopped piling new projects on us).

We found a few provable problems. We found that one item of software which was declared non compliant did continue to work.

We'll never know what would have happened if we didn't upgrade/patch everything - but man, we had some clean up to date systems by 2000 :)

In an ideal world, you wouldn't need a media panicjust to get your half-arsed manager to let you do your job, but hey - this is Britain ;-)

    Cheers
