I am in my early 60's and have been in software development since 1981. I dipped my toe into management but found that first line managers get laid off before the engineers so I decided to stay in the technical area. Currently, I'm working as a software architect where I can use both my technical acumen as well as some soft skills. Coding is still my first love although I don't get to do it anymore. Over the past decades, I have earned a master's in software engineering and also co-founded a mobile app company (nights and weekends) both of which helped me to keep sharpening my skills which helped me stay relevant. It's also fortunate that I don't look my age so I can blend in.
I have the sincere opinion that being sexually attracted to the same gender is deviant. I also believe that marriage is a sacred contract that God (the God that I follow) has declared as being between a man and a woman. We will all draw the line somewhere - marriage is between a man and a woman... not a man (or woman) and a child... not a man (or woman) and another species. If you believe otherwise, show me the line you draw.
These beliefs don't affect my ability to develop software and lead my team... anymore than they affected Eich's ability to develop software and lead people.
In protest to the intolerant behavior of Mozilla and some of its employees who hounded their CEO out of his position, I have uninstalled Mozilla products from my computers. As the "it guy" for my family, I am encouraging all my family and friends to do likewise. As the owner of a software company, I will direct our products to encourage our customers to use . I am against intolerance of a person's honest opinion. We, as a society, haven't learned to respect the sincere opinion of people when we disagree with that opinion. We will suffer the consequences of that behavior just as we suffered the consequences of that behavior in the past.
Your point about it being unfortunately presented at a professional conference resonates with me. TechCrunch lost some credibility with me after this experience. I don't want to watch a guy masturbate or stare at porn about as much as I want to watch him pick his nose and eat it. By the way, I am a woman who has been a software engineer for 32 years and the stories I could tell...
