  1. Re:Theft vs. Copying on Napster Traffic Drops · · Score: 1
Finally, a Slashdotter with some commonsense...:)

    >>Give it up. Downloading illegal mp3s is not a >>natural progression of Freedom of Speech; it's >>not some noble crusade to make information >>free. It's theft.

Very nicely put, and dammit I'm addicted, so away I go stealing again. Just one more point, what the hell is with this complete superiority complex with regard to britney spears music...

It's not my favourite type of music, but let it go already. Just because you reject popular society (that's what pop is by the way) doesn't make you deeper than anyone. There's no difference between going clubbing, smoking, drinking, and playing Quake or Unreal online. No difference between loving off a nice BMW and loving off Linux. Its all buying into something. Just one is bought into more than something else.

The way things are going, 100 years from now when nerds rule the way, it will be the underground who call themselves deep by listening to Britney spears music.

  2. Re:So What on Napster to Filter by Filenames · · Score: 1

When has Napster ever been about a business model. We all know, even the self-proclaimed revolutionaries at /. know that its just about getting stuff for free. It's stealing, always has been always will be. That's not to say that you shouldn't steal from a bunch of idiots. It's only not stealing if the artist/producers/record companies want to offer their music for "trial" purposes. Yamin

  4. Why so anti-closed software? on New "mp3PRO" From Fraunhofer, But What About LAME? · · Score: 1
I've been on slashdot long enough to know that OPEN source is the only way to go. Simply put...why is there such a poor atitude towards Fraunhofer who is developing something new on top of a format that we all enjoy? I see no net benefit between close and open source as both have their own advantages and disadvantages. For every good examply given, there is a poor one for each type.

Thy anti-closed attitude here is just sad especially since the claims of open-source have always been about creating "new" and this is "new." Why not take a look at reality once in a while instead of living in a self-created open-source heaven and battling the gates of closed-source hell led by the forces of Bill Gates. You are not fighting a holy war as much as you'd like to be revolutionaries...its just self-made.

Enjoy the new format and the hopeful improvements it has. Develop alongside or against it as in the end, any development is good.

  5. Over reacting by a mile, but hey its their media on All Digital TVs To Include Copy Restrictions · · Score: 1
Well its not like any of us didn't expect this type of retalliation. I mean its easy to attain and copy media, but what good is that if it won't work on your new HDTV with 48 speaker surround sound. This is similar to what I read earlier about copy protection on computer media like harddrives.

First of all, I'm sure these are not the end all copy protection methods by any means as I'm sure the local neighbourhood computer wiz will break it or the market will come up with something (similar to the ModChip for Playstation, don;t fret on the analogy). Illegal media does and will always exist to our benefit.

In the end, if they choose to implement such things, it will be their choice and we will just have to deal with it. Now if they decide to start reporting my illegal usage through my own device, then we may some issues. As I said this stuff really doesn't worry me too much...it will keep the average person away, but we will return to the days when only a few could attain the illegal product. Remember BBS and stuff - not everyone hooked up on those. Nowadays, illegal media is public...and that's the problem.

  6. Re:What connection? on Up, Up, Down, Down: Part Three · · Score: 1
Not a direct connection, as in if you game, this is the result. My connection is the stereotyped gamer, and I know many to consider it decently valid. Social skills are one thing, but the attitude is another, and its in the attitude where my conneciton lies. There are just too many non-gamers with poor social skill to draw any connection between social skill and gaming.

The attitude by a lot of gamers is that of the rest of society goes out pointlessly trying to fulfill the expectations of western life. The rest of society is shallow and a slave to society. I'm sure not all gamers feel this way, but a lot do, and the ones that make the most noise always get noticed.

Unfortunately, I play enough UT and know enough gamers to know the gaming culture is just the same in its depth.

  7. You're not the boss of me! on Up, Up, Down, Down: Part Three · · Score: 1
I am by no means what people might call a cool person, and maybe I've only taken one sociology course, but this seems like a case of third degree deviance. Deviating from the norms and then being so proud of it that it becomes the best option.

Don't take that too seriously, but I mean really, gamers being the future of the world's artists and whatnot? Soldiers on the battlefield gain almost all the skills of the gamer WITHOUT the save games and magical powerups, and I don't see too many of them being the future of society. As was said earlier, sometimes a game is just a game.

Sure, I can see how some UT levels can classify as art, but then again, everything is art. I think the greatest absurdity posed by this new generation is the sheer lacking of social ability. No, I do not mean that all gamers are loners, not even that most are. As Chris Rock points out, those Columbine kids were a group of 6. That's 3 on 3 with a half-court.

What I do mean is that there is just a lacking of social skill with regard to society. No, you may not want to visit aunt betty, but it is neccessary for things to move smoothly. You may not want to wear a suit for your graduation, but do things not run much smoother. Quite frankly, so much of what we do is simply not important to who we are that we do need to accept social customs to allow things to move freely. Social customs may be shallow, but moving against them for the sake of "I don't want to", and "you're not the boss of me" is going above the surface.

Play games, enjoy them, have online communities, don't go jump in the snow (lord knows I won't), but don't lose sight of the fact that there is a socity out there, and just as there are virtual customs (like a pointless "gg", after a UT match, there a social customs).

  8. Nice Stats...if only and its still STEALING on The Truth About File-Sharing · · Score: 2

First, most of those stats are interview questions, and as we all know, so many people are not honest on these questions..remember those elementary school sex and drug tests...Aside from that, does this really chnage anything?

I have been and always will be a fan of online music and entertainment, but I still believe it is the artists/recording companies right and choice as to wether they choose to have their product shared online. If they choose not to benefit from person x's dollar by not allowing previews, then that is their bad business move. But I've got at least 2 gigs of "sampled mp3s"

And if the artist/record company refuses to allow sharing, then what you are doing is STEALING. Yes, it is stealing. Let me go out and steal 50 cars, and maybe I'll buy one Kia or maybe I'll influence 10 people to buy a car of a type that I stole. That's not stealing, its encouraging me to buy cars. Come on...this stretch to justify getting stuff for free is ridiculous. Its theft no matter which way you play it. I guess I steal...oooohh...and I break the speed limit too, no...I'm encouraging productivity.

Basically, it is stealing. We are presented with a product that we want, but do not want to buy in the legally presented means. So we take it anyways, and maybe we'll but it.

Where do I want to see the industry go: I want to go to HMV or online and buy a CD full of MP3s for a decent price. That will take time, but its all good.

Just as a final note to all those who claim that record companies screw artists: Record Companies make artists...a lot of them and deserve the proportion they get. Oh yeah, backstreet boys got their on talent and brotherly love alone. Those artists that think they have talent can take their stuff to the street and hope people buy it.
Also, with respect to "intellectual property," the artists/record companies creation is theirs, and they allow you to entertain yourself with it. It is not your right (so many rights, so many conflicts). I believe you have a right to a technology, not an application of it.
