  1. Maxlink flameout on Is The Wireless Internet Not Ready For Prime Time? · · Score: 1

Don't confuse fixed wireless (Maxlink, Winstar, etc.) with with mobile wireless (Bell Mobility, etc.) Maxlink was trying to position itself as a broadband provider but, curiously, declined to identify the fact that it was planning to deliver 10 mbps with a wireless last-mile. Maybe their marketing research revealed that the public would not be able to distinguish the difference between fixed and mobile wireless. All they claimed to provide was wideband last-mile service delivered magically to the depths of 905 land that others could not. In response to your question, I think that mobile is not ready because the B to B thin client applications (like wireless field service, etc.) aren't ready and also the user appliances are also not ready. (Tried web surfing from your cellphone lately?) PCS bandwidth is too restricted for honkin' apps but the emerging 3rd Genertation mobile wireless will look after some of that. Also, new PDA/cellphone hybrids are coming. As far as fixed is concerned, some of the apps may be ready but, in the end, you have to sell it and, in Maxlink's case, I think that management was too distracted trying to secure financing to make it happen. If they are acquired as a going concern (a big if), I think that the right buyer could leverage the backbone and unique last-mile to carve out a substantial niche.
