These devices would translate the spoken word into a blast of energy (part of the wierding way). The Fremen in the book were taught how to use these, and were equipped with them when they fought (it was not just battle with knives in the book).
This point is also of importance because in the book Maud'dib was a killing word. The movie's portrayal of the wierding way left a lot to be desired, IMO.
