This is only part of it. Copyright exists for life plus 70 years. For a corporation, it exists for 95 or so years. Copyright law is more concerned with a natural law type of rule: the basis that people have some rights over what they create themselves. Patent law, on the other hand, is designed to encourage innovation to fall into the public.
1976 Copyright Act:
Section 107. Limitation on exclusive rights: fair use.
"...The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies...for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching..., scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright..."
