Just to put forward an example of a movie which is enhanced by an understanding of its source material, but which stands on its own even without: try Galaxy Quest. I've watched it several times with trekkie friends and non-trekkers alike, and all have enjoyed, even if us trekkies did get much more out of it. There is even alt least one example of a good board-game-cum-movie adaption: Clue. Richer for having played the board game, but hilarious to all who have seen it.
Having a small budget is no excuse for making a bad movie. Having a bad director does not excuse the producers of responsibility or the movie itself for being bad.
I fervently hope that if they decide someday to do a Magic: The Gathering or Jihad or Illuminati: NWO movie something will have been learned. But I doubt it. Now, the M:TG ads I've seen on TV give me some hope since they keep so close to the game. We'll see. If they involve any expansions after Dark we'll be in trouble. In the case of Illuminati, who wouldn't want to see Hillary with a leash on Bill? Would require fewer special effects, too.
