  1. Getting Content on The Napsterization of TV · · Score: 2

How does this help me share the content with my friends? By having them get at the shitty stream in wmv format? Give me a break!

Here is something I want for all of you code-genius /. coders:

A simple windows programs (ok maybe mac and linux too) that allows me to __mirror__ a directory to a friend so that all of my hard work at Morpheus can be shared on a private buddylist basis.

    Two things:

    1. I know I know: cron+rsync+ssh+bash script. But this thing has to run on windoze and has to be much easier than this.

    2. I know, I know: its not as free as just continuing to get/put the content on the Fast Track network. But I have a lot of buddies who would like to see my episodes of 24, but who wouldnt go near Morpheus for fear of all of that crappy spyware and because when they tried to download the LoR preview at work they ended up getting a video of Pamela Anderson giving head to some bonehead rocker.

    Help me out programming geniuses!

This looks good for digital tv (which I guess is big in Europe) but I am not sure that it helps us Mediaone folks, or for that matter most of the US cable households...

I presume that not having to do the analog-to-digital conversion makes the task quite a bit easier.

Here are a couple of challenges for you (not insurmountable but not obvious) 1. capture I havent seen any really good linux capture alternatives. bttvgrab is hard to get to work and xawtv's grab feature tends to crap out. Also even if you got something that worked you would soon run into the 2GB file size limit if 2.2. And dont even get me started on the issues related to getting audio that actually syncs with the video you capture. 2. encode You ideally want to do realtime mpeg encoding but I havent seen anything that does this well. Sure I've heard about mp1e but I have yet to find any real info on it. Without realtime mpeg, you need to rely on post capture encoding which means waiting around for 2-10 hours for your stuff to be ready. I'd be curious if anyone has solved these issues. After those, the tv listing crap is easy...

  4. What about Replay? on More Tivo Hacking · · Score: 1

For all of us poor sods that were taken in by the glitzier Replay boxes, is there an option to hack?

I am not even sure what OS Replay is running...QNX?

Has anyone tried hacking a replay?

  5. Proxim on More Wireless Networking for Linux · · Score: 2

I've got a Proxim Symphony network that works across all of my family's houses and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to get my Sony VAIO 505 to run the card under Linux. Binary module is available and with the exception of APM which screws up the card when you suspend/resume the laptop it works as well if not better than W95.
