  1. Particulate Emissions on Europe Slips on Kyoto Greenhouse Targets · · Score: 1

It should come as no surprise that Europe is following this trend. Because fuel prices are up to 4 times of what they are in the U.S., European drivers are more or less forced to drive diesel-powered vehicles. Even the "cleanest" diesel engines spew out a great deal more of particulate emissions than their gasoline counterparts. Not only that, but NOX and other greenhouse gas emissions are also much higher from diesel engines, thanks to the fact that the exhaust is not hot enough to properly activate any catalysts in a tyical catalytic converter.

Add to that the fact that many eastern European countries (not part of the EU but affectig Europe nonetheless) are not very strict with their emissions policies and a large percentage of the population is driving pre-1985 vehicles, many of which do not even have catalytic converters. This trend has also been seen in Mexico (esp. Mexico City), where greenhouse gas levels are insanely high.

  2. Puh-leeease on BOA: Web Scripting In Pure HTML · · Score: 1

This really defines "dumbing down". The developers of BOA were simply bored. They even admit that its "just another server-side scripting language". Their description cites the flaws of real languages (like Perl) - that it is too hard, and that too many concepts must be learnt before any development can be done. What wimps.

I think that developers and designers who actually know real programming languages and real HTML (not WYSIWYG-editor crap) have a great advantage in that knowing these concepts is a good indicator of your overall intelligence - something potential employers should be looking for.

  3. Let's Do the Math... on Credit Card Database Stolen -- 4 Months Ago · · Score: 1

I know it's a little off topic, but I feel I must speak my mind here...Credit cards are so insanely insecure that simple math will tell you there is a good possibility that you can guess a cc number. Take a typical cc number like: 4159 7440 2004 3054 Well, "4159" indicates "Visa" (there is a # for every 'type' of cc), the rest of the numbers are free-for-all. If you calculate the number of digits a cc can hold, it works out to 1,000,000,000,000 (10^12) - only 12 digits to guess. I suspect this is how my cc was eroneously charged many a time. cc lottery anyone? ---"And now for something completely different..."
