SBC is constantly in danger of being sanctioned for its lack of customer care. I won't bore you with my whole PacBell horror story because it just gets me fired up. The whole thing got me mad enough to research the issues surrounding the recent deregulation legislation. I wanted to know why I was having such a hard time getting another phone service provider. There are a bunch of different sites out there, but the best I found was www.phonecompetition.org because it had links to write letters to the key players like the PUC and local congress people.
The government has tried to regulate SWB. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 that was supposed to force PacBell and all the other regional bell companies to open up the local market to competition in exchange for access to the long distance market. Instead of cooperating, the bells are trying to create loopholes in the act to get long distance rights and maintain their local monopolies. There is a bunch of current information about it at
