  1. Re:Trends or Crutches? on Do Static Source Code Analysis Tools Really Work? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Did you walk uphill in the snow, both ways, when you were a kid, too? At one point in time, high-level languages like ASSEMBLER were considered crutches for people who weren't Real Programmers. Get some perspective!

Look, people make mistakes, and regardless of how good a programmer you are, there is a limit to the amount of state you can hold in your head, and you WILL dereference a NULL pointer, or create a reference loop, at some point in your career.

Using a computer to catch these errors is just another flavor of metaprogramming. Get over it, and go be more productive with these tools, instead of whining for the days when you coded on bare metal with your bare hands and you liked it.

    Arrgh.

I agree with most of what's being said here. Indulge me while I try to rephrase it a little differently.

Rewriting a large codebase may gain you flexibility in building out future functionality, and reduced operational costs.

But be warned that there is very little you can say to justify a rewrite to management/marketer types. To them, you're taking something that works and making it ... still work.

I've found that many users are willing to risk encountering bugs if they're going to be rewarded with better functionality. But you would risk introducing bugs while offering users no reward. This could get rough if they're the ones paying the bills.

  3. Re:Will we do it? on Lawrence Lessig Answers Your Questions · · Score: 1

You complain about the politics of Dr. Lessig and suggest that he is part of a corrupt political system because he put out a general call for activism in favor of personal freedoms.

He made this call for activism in a forum which is peopled by technologists who habitually post complaints about the diminishment of personal freedom by corporations (just do a search on ./ for "Skylarov" for ample proof).

He made this call in a forum which would not exist if it wasn't for these very personal freedoms being discussed.

And yet you still find grounds to complain about his attempts at activism. I'm sure the world would be a much better place if we all just shut our eyes and hoped for the best, but I'd much rather take the safe route and at least try to be part of the solution.

A website called The Vines Network" handles content control in a karma-like method.

Users of their online encyclopedia rate the articles from 1 to 10. Articles are sorted in order of the authors' karma ranking.

Seems like a pretty good way to keep trolls out of the encyclopedia without limiting their ability to post.

    Just like /.

  7. putting VA's IPO in perspective on Class Action Lawsuit Against VA · · Score: 2

to give you an idea of just how fantastically successful VA's IPO was, just let me say this:

according to Bloomberg analytics, VA had the best first-day performance of any IPO during Q4 99. they beat out 160 other IPOs for the largest first-day gain of 797% (from IPO price of 30 to close at 239 1/4). and it went even higher, to 252, in after-hours trading that day.

so i don't find it tough to believe that funny stuff was going on.
