Exactly. I saw this guy on ZDTV's show "Big Thinkers". He talked almost completely in glittering genaralities about how virtual reality was going to change the world. And the statement that "software sucks" is anything but new. In 1975, a guy named Fred Brooks described a "Software Crisis", and there were many people declaring the same thing before that. In the 90's author Steve McConnell sold millions of books that declared "software sucks". Everything old is new again. Does Jaron Lanier really consider himself a visionary?
Mr. Lanier might want to take a look at methodologies such as Extreme Programming, or object oriented analysis, design, and programming, before he judges the human race as being too stupid to develop quality software. He might also might want to take a look at the SEI's Capability Maturity Model (CMM). Or maybe he's never really built any software bigger than a couple hundred lines, or maybe he just craves attention by making brave but baseless claims.
