The computing labs at my uni. are arranged kinda like that. I don't think it's for that reason though. It's still really annoying... you never know when someone might be looking over your shoulder...
All the messaging programs at the moment suck really badly. ICQ and AIM are both pretty woeful.
The free software community needs to produce it's own, secure messaging software. Including strong encryption would be a great "selling" point (of course that leaves you with those nice little US encryption laws...).
Richard Stallman is not a communist. Communists believe that property should be centrally controlled by the government. Stallman does not believe this; he believes that the government should not enact, support or enforce intellectual property rights pertaining to software.
In fact, one could even argue that RMS is an ultra-capitalist, as he believes in nullifying the vast majority of government-interference in relation to software.

I could be wrong, but isn't it considered to be a pretty heinous 'net crime to publicly post a private email without the author's permmission?
