  1. ACLU Overreacting? on Fingerprints for School Lunches · · Score: 1

I went and read the CNN story, and it sounds like the ACLU is overreacting. I saw not one single complaint about the system, only complaints about what the system represents as a possible future. The fact is, all this system does is record a set of identifying points on a finger, and compare them to a database of such information. Nothing more. And I have to admit I strongly agree with the arguement about not stimatizing students that receive free and reduced-fee lunches. I received free lunches through high school, and even though not having to wait in line to pay was cool, the stigma attached to "doing something different" was harsh.

  3. Re:what is that? on Hardware QWERTY-to-DVORAK Conversion? · · Score: 1

I assume you're asking what a dvorak keyboard is. A bit of history: before the invention of computers, typewriters were popular. The dvorak key layout was developed to place all the most commonly used keys either directly under the typest's fingers, or within easy reach. The only problem was, the typests now typed so fast that the bars for the keys would get jammed. So someone invented the querty key layout, to alleviate this problem. Many people prefer dvorak because you really can type faster using it.

  4. Not all MS majors have a BS of the same topic on Graduate CS Program For Non-CS Undergrads? · · Score: 1

I am an undergraduate student at Arizona State University majoring in Computer Science. One of my favorite instructors says that while he appreciates the value of an Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, he misses the day when there wasn't one, and people came to MS Computer Science programs from all sorts of different backgrounds. I know that there are some people in the MS Computer Science program here that didn't do their undergrad work in CS; one, in particular, majored in Anthropology. But as far as I can tell, they just have to make sure they take all the prerequisites for their classes, even if that means taking classes that won't count towards their degree.

I'm actually looking forward to this sort of environment, with people of all sorts of different backgrounds. My hope is to be accepted to MIT's Media Arts and Sciences MS program, and as far as I know, there is currently no undergraduate program for it, although it is in development. Even if they do get it developed soon, it will still have been too late for me and the people who will be entering the MS program to have taken advantage of it.
